The title of deck XC2257 — Metabolism & Energy (111 cards) promises glycolysis regulation and enzyme kinetics. The cards deliver something else: 79 of the 111 are photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and "metabolism" is not defined until card 80. It is a bioenergetics deck with a biochemistry appendix bolted on — and knowing that makes it far easier to study.

The three blocks

Cards 1-31 and 70-78, photosynthesis. Chloroplasts, thylakoids, grana, stroma, chlorophyll, accessory pigments (carotenoids, xanthophylls), light-harvesting complexes, Photosystems I and II, the Z-scheme, photolysis, the oxygen-evolving complex of manganese and calcium, cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation, the Calvin cycle, RuBisCO, RuBP, 3-phosphoglycerate, G3P, carbon fixation, photorespiration, C4 and CAM plants, photosynthetic efficiency, endosymbiotic theory.

Cards 32-69 and 79, cellular respiration. Glycolysis, pyruvate, pyruvate oxidation, acetyl-CoA, the Krebs cycle, the mitochondrial matrix, cristae, NADH, FADH₂, the electron transport chain, oxygen as final acceptor, chemiosmosis, the proton gradient, ATP synthase, oxidative and substrate-level phosphorylation, lactic acid and alcoholic fermentation, anaerobic respiration.

Cards 80-111, actual metabolism. Catabolism vs anabolism, ATP, enzymes, active sites, substrates, specificity, coenzymes and cofactors, NAD⁺ vs NADP⁺, competitive and non-competitive inhibition, allosteric enzymes, feedback inhibition, metabolic pathways, beta oxidation, gluconeogenesis, the pentose phosphate pathway, the Cori cycle, lactate dehydrogenase, insulin, basal metabolic rate.

Eight cards as written

FrontBack
PhotolysisSplitting of water molecules using light energy (produces O₂, H⁺, and electrons)
What enzyme catalyzes carbon fixation?RuBisCO (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase)
PhotorespirationWasteful process where RuBisCO binds O₂ instead of CO₂
CAM plantsPlants that fix CO₂ at night to conserve water (e.g., cacti)
How much ATP is produced per glucose in aerobic respiration?About 30-32 ATP (older estimates said 38)
NAD+ vs NADP+NAD+/NADH is used in catabolism (energy production); NADP+/NADPH is used in anabolism (biosynthesis)
Pentose phosphate pathwayAn alternative glucose oxidation pathway that produces NADPH for biosynthesis and ribose for nucleotides
Cori cycleThe metabolic pathway where lactate from muscles is converted back to glucose in the liver

Suspend the duplicates at card 91 first

The seam between blocks two and three is where the deck repeats itself. Card 92 (citric acid cycle) restates cards 42 and 68; card 93 (electron transport chain) restates card 47; card 94 (total ATP per glucose) restates card 53; card 91 (net ATP from glycolysis) restates cards 37 and 54. Keep whichever version carries the number, suspend the other, and your retention stats stop lying to you. Cards 65 and 110 get the same treatment.

The kinetics gap, and how to fill it

Eight enzyme cards cover competitive and non-competitive inhibition, allosteric regulation and feedback inhibition — and not one covers Michaelis-Menten, Km or Vmax. Inhibition is normally taught through its effect on Km and Vmax, which is exactly what an exam asks. Write those four cards and slot them before card 108.

Two smaller holes: glycogen appears in the insulin card (103) but no front ever defines it, and insulin has no glucagon counterpart — the pair is the whole story of fed versus fasted metabolism.

One phrasing to distrust: card 38 says glycolysis "is anaerobic". It runs with or without oxygen — oxygen-independent is the accurate word, and the distinction matters when you reach fermentation at card 57.

Deck XC2257 — Metabolism & Energy is in the Flip It library at flip-it.app. Cards 77-78 on endosymbiotic theory connect directly to our study guide to evolution, and the chloroplast vocabulary pairs well with taxonomy and insect biology.
