Docker questions in interviews are rarely philosophical: they are "what does this command do" and "why is your image 1.2 GB". Deck RY7526 — Docker: Commands & Concepts (58 cards) sits in that register — a third CLI, a fifth Dockerfile syntax, the rest the vocabulary you need to read somebody else's docker-compose.yml.

What the 58 cards cover

The deck falls into four clean blocks, which is unusually tidy and worth exploiting:

  • Cards 1-10, the object model: Docker, container, image, Dockerfile, Docker Hub, Docker Engine, the dockerd daemon, registry, Docker Compose, Docker Swarm.
  • Cards 11-29, the CLI: run, build, pull, push, ps, ps -a, images, stop, start, restart, rm, rmi, exec, logs, inspect, commit, tag, volume, network.
  • Cards 30-39, Dockerfile instructions: FROM, RUN, CMD, ENTRYPOINT, COPY, ADD, WORKDIR, EXPOSE, ENV, VOLUME.
  • Cards 40-58, runtime and build behaviour: bind mounts, port mapping, -d, -it, --rm, layer caching, multi-stage builds, containers vs VMs, docker-compose up and down, the bridge and host network drivers, health checks, orchestration, Swarm vs Kubernetes, .dockerignore, copy-on-write.

Eight cards, verbatim

FrontBack
Docker imageA read-only template used to create Docker containers
docker execExecutes a command inside a running container
ENTRYPOINT instruction in a DockerfileConfigures a container to run as an executable
CMD vs ENTRYPOINTENTRYPOINT defines the executable; CMD provides default arguments that can be overridden
Port mapping in DockerMapping a container port to a host port using -p flag: -p 8080:80
Multi-stage buildUsing multiple FROM instructions in a Dockerfile to create smaller final images
Default Docker networkBridge - the default network driver for standalone containers
Docker copy-on-write strategyA strategy where files are shared between layers until they are modified

A study order that beats card 1 to card 58

Reverse the deck's own logic. Start with cards 30-39, the Dockerfile instructions: every one is a word you will type this week. Then cards 40-48, where the flags and the two comparison cards are the highest-yield items in the set. Sweep the 19 CLI cards after that — they come almost free once you know what an image and a registry are — and keep cards 1-10 for last, as review.

Two corrections to make before your first session

Card 51 is wrong. It says docker-compose down "stops and removes containers, networks, and volumes created by up". It does not remove volumes — that is the point of a volume; you need down -v for that. Rewrite the back, because believing this card is how people lose a database. Note too that cards 50-51 use the legacy hyphenated v1 syntax; the current form is docker compose.

Cards 28 and 29 have broken fronts — 'docker volume and 'docker network, with an unclosed quote — and their backs say these commands "create" a volume or a network. They do not: bare docker volume and docker network are management command groups that print help. Fix the fronts to docker volume create and docker network create.

One gap worth filling yourself

The deck teaches ENV (card 38) but never ARG, and build-time ARG versus runtime ENV is both a standard interview question and a standard way to leak a secret — write those two cards yourself. Then pair EXPOSE (card 37), which only documents a port, with -p (card 42), which actually publishes it. Learn them together or you will merge them into one wrong idea.
