What the deck covers
Everyday commands (init, clone, add, commit, status, push, pull, fetch, branch, checkout -b, log, diff, stash pop, remote add origin, tag), history surgery (reset, revert, rebase, cherry-pick, reflog), diagnostics (blame, bisect, grep, fsck, gc), internals (HEAD, blob, tree, tag object, SHA-1, packfile, delta compression, staging area / Index), merging (three-way, recursive, octopus, fast-forward, merge conflict, Git-flow), the ecosystem (GitHub, GitLab, JGit, libgit2, Git LFS, BitKeeper) and the modern pair git switch / git restore.
Tip 1: learn the German vocabulary pairs, not sentences
German developers keep most Git nouns in English (der Branch, der Commit, das Repository) but translate the structural ones. Pull out these pairs as their own mini-set before the commands: working directory = Arbeitsverzeichnis, staging area = Staging-Bereich / Index, history = Historie, merge = zusammenführen, discard = verwerfen, undo = rückgängig machen. Once these six are automatic, every back in the deck reads in one pass. Note the verbs too: committen, pushen, mergen are normal spoken German; a German colleague will rarely say zusammenführen out loud.
Tip 2: rewrite three cards before you trust them
The German backs copy three weak spots from the English source:
- Card 52, "Five object types": Git has four objects (Blob, Tree, Commit, Tag). A packfile is the storage container, not a type. Change the back to Blob, Tree, Commit und Tag.
- Card 47, "Recursive merge strategy" is called the default. Since Git 2.34 the default is ort; recursive is now an alias for it.
- Card 35, SHA-1: still the default, but SHA-256 repositories have existed (experimentally) since Git 2.29.
Also add the missing card the deck never writes: Commit-Objekt = Snapshot (Tree) + Eltern + Autor + Nachricht. And pair checkout with switch/restore (cards 15, 67, 68) so you learn which one to type today.
Study order
Cards 1-28 first (daily commands), then 29-35 and 52-55 (internals) as one block, then the merge cluster 45-50. The tooling trivia (56-59) can wait.
