The Population & Major Cities deck on Flip It (deck code BM8257, 199 cards) answers all of it with current figures, and this study guide shows how to memorize the numbers without drowning in them.

Two decks in one
The 199 cards split into two clear blocks:
- Cards 1-100: countries. The top-10 ranking, superlatives by continent and language, then the population and world rank of about 70 countries from Japan (~123 million, 11th) down to New Zealand (~5 million, 124th).
- Cards 101-199: cities. The world's megacities (Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, Dhaka, São Paulo, Cairo, Mexico City, Beijing, Mumbai, Karachi, Lagos, Istanbul…), regional metros (Seoul Capital Area, Klang Valley, Jabodetabek, Keihanshin, Île-de-France, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex) and the vocabulary demographers use: city proper, metropolitan area, urban area, urban agglomeration, megacity, combined statistical area (CSA), slum population, the UN 68 % urban projection for 2050.

The top 10 you must know cold
India (~1.45 bn), China (~1.42 bn), United States (~340 m), Indonesia (~280 m), Pakistan (~240 m), Nigeria (~230 m), Brazil (~216 m), Bangladesh (~175 m), Russia (~145 m), Mexico (~130 m). India and China together hold ~2.87 billion people, about 36 % of humanity.
The deck then asks the same ten answers from different angles, which is where points are won: Indonesia is at once the most populous country in Southeast Asia, the most populous island nation and the most populous Muslim-majority country; Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country; Mexico the largest Spanish-speaking one; Egypt (~112 million) is both the largest Arab country and the largest in the Middle East; Russia is the most populous country in Europe but Germany is the most populous country entirely in Europe.
Study tips specific to this deck
Memorize ranks, not raw numbers. The country cards give both ("~68 million, 22nd"), and the rank is what makes neighbours distinguishable: UK 21st, France 22nd, Tanzania 23rd, South Africa 24th, Italy 25th all sit around 60-68 million. Learn the order, and the figures follow.
Anchor the ~10 million and ~5 million clusters. Greece, Portugal, Sweden, Hungary and Israel all sit at ~10 million; Norway, Ireland, Finland, Denmark and New Zealand at 5-6 million. Grouping them turns ten cards into two facts.
For cities, tag each card with its definition. Shanghai (24 million) and Beijing (21 million) are city proper figures; Tokyo (37 million) and Jakarta are metropolitan figures. Knowing which measure a card uses explains why the rankings seem to contradict each other, and the deck asks this explicitly in its "challenge of measuring city populations" card.
