If your English is already good enough to sit the TOEFL, the words that cost you points are not the exotic ones — they are assume, whereas, offset, notwithstanding: the academic glue that decides whether a reading passage makes sense. Flip It deck BH1835, TOEFL: Lista de Vocabulario Académico (378 cards), is the Spanish edition of the platform's Academic Word List deck: English words on the front, a clear Spanish definition on the back. Nothing is translated word for word, so you learn the meaning rather than a false friend.

Qué cubren las 378 cartas

El mazo sigue el orden de las sublistas de la Academic Word List, de lo más frecuente a lo más raro:

  • Base académica — analyze, approach, area, assessment, authority, available, benefit, concept, consist, context, contract, create, data, define, distribute, economy, environment, establish, estimate, evident, export, factor, finance, formula, function, identify, income, indicate, individual, interpret, involve, issue, labor, legal, legislate, major, method, proceed.
  • Investigación y argumentación — achieve, acquire, conclude, conduct, consequent, construct, detect, evaluate, hypothesis, insight, investigate, integrate, integrity, intense, interact, intermediate, internal, interval, intervene, intrinsic, isolate, outcome, priority, revise, summary, unify.
  • Economía, derecho y sociedad — commission, credit, globe, institute, invest, job, label, layer, lecture, levy, liberal, license, regulate, restrict, welfare.
  • Conectores que cambian el sentido de una frase — whereas, whereby, widespread, virtual, visible, vision, visual, volume, voluntary.

Cada reverso es una definición en español, no una traducción de una sola palabra: medium no es simplemente «medio», sino «una sustancia intermedia a través de la cual algo es transmitido».

Two tips for this edition

1. Answer in Spanish, then produce an English synonym. The TOEFL Writing and Speaking sections reward you for using these words, not for recognising them. Once the Spanish definition comes automatically, do a second pass where the target is an English paraphrase — offset → "to cancel out". Recognition alone caps you in Reading.

2. Ignore the capital letters on the fronts. Every front is capitalised (Analyze, Whereby) because of how the deck was built; in a real passage these words appear in lower case and mid-sentence. Do not let the capital fool you into reading them as proper nouns — and note that the deck's own description mentions 500 words while the deck actually ships 378 cards.
