Check the deck before you schedule it. Nursing: Patient Safety & Infection Control (deck code RX8769, 43 cards) contains no infection control at all — no hand hygiene, no PPE sequence, no standard or transmission-based precautions, no isolation categories, no CLABSI, CAUTI or VAP. And the safety it teaches is the nurse's safety, not the patient's: occupational stress, burnout, musculoskeletal injury and workplace violence. Study it for what it is and it delivers; expect NCLEX infection-control items and you walk in empty-handed.

The 43 cards, honestly labelled

A third define the profession and its scope; two thirds cover occupational hazards — the strong half, because those cards carry hard numbers.

FrontBack
Rates of occupational burnout and emotional exhaustion among nursesBurnout: 40%, Emotional exhaustion: 43.2%
Most frequently injured body part among nursesThe back, with up to 72% of nurses reporting non-specific low back pain
Single greatest factor in overexertion injuries among nursesManual lifting, moving and repositioning of patients, according to NIOSH
What percentage of musculoskeletal injuries in healthcare are related to patient handling?Anywhere from 30% to 70% of reported injuries
Three types of workplace violence nurses can experiencePhysical (hitting, kicking, beating, biting), psychological (threats or coercion), and sexual violence
What percentage of serious violent incidents in healthcare centers are committed by patients?80% of serious violent incidents
Are traditional manual patient handling training techniques effective? No — the body of evidence has demonstrated that such interventions are ineffective
Most effective approach to reducing nursing stressCombining organizational and individual interventions
Organizational coercion in nursingExcessive workloads, mandatory shifts, involuntary placement, low salaries, denial of benefits and overtime

Terms you will own afterwards: evidence-based practice, research utilization barriers, nursing assessment, legal responsibility for administered drugs, the right to refuse a harmful medication, patient and family education techniques, activities of daily living, emotional versus physical labour, shift work, compassion fatigue, moral distress, depersonalization, individual- versus organization-focused interventions, powered exoskeletons in Japanese hospitals, nursing ethics, the care-versus-cure distinction, advocacy, health policy, the nursing care plan, medication management, and Henderson's definition of the unique function of the nurse.

Two repairs before your first review

Card 2 is backwards. "Nursing process as defined by the American Nurses Association" answers "1) Evaluate, 2) Implement, 3) Plan, 4) Diagnose, 5) Assess" — the five steps in reverse. ADPIE runs Assess, Diagnose, Plan, Implement, Evaluate, and exam questions test exactly that sequence. Rewrite the back, or you will drill the wrong order 30 times.

One front is unanswerable. "Where did pay rank among factors that would make nurses stay in their roles?" answers "eighth" — from a survey the deck never shows, with ranks one through seven missing. Either delete it or turn it into the point that matters: pay ranks below staffing, workload and management support in retention surveys.

It overlaps a deck you may already know

RX8769 and Nursing Fundamentals (LS9900) are two slices of the same source text. Five fronts are identical — the nursing process, health problems from occupational stress, the physician-versus-nurse distinction, the nursing care plan, medication management — and another twenty repeat the same statistics in different words. If you have run LS9900, suspend those and keep only the violence and injury cards, which RX8769 covers in more depth.

Best study move: pair it with a real infection-control source and write the twelve missing cards yourself — hand hygiene moments, donning and doffing order, contact/droplet/airborne precautions, and the three most-tested device-associated infections.
