Fifty states, fifty capitals, and the deck US States & Capitals (code AU8445) gives you every pair in one clean, accurate list: Alabama → Montgomery through Wyoming → Cheyenne. The cards are correct and complete. The only thing working against you is the order: they run alphabetically, so after a few reviews you start answering "Montpelier" because Vermont always follows Utah, not because you know it.

All 50 capitals covered: Montgomery, Juneau, Phoenix, Little Rock, Sacramento, Denver, Hartford, Dover, Tallahassee, Atlanta, Honolulu, Boise, Springfield, Indianapolis, Des Moines, Topeka, Frankfort, Baton Rouge, Augusta, Annapolis, Boston, Lansing, Saint Paul, Jackson, Jefferson City, Helena, Lincoln, Carson City, Concord, Trenton, Santa Fe, Albany, Raleigh, Bismarck, Columbus, Oklahoma City, Salem, Harrisburg, Providence, Columbia, Pierre, Nashville, Austin, Salt Lake City, Montpelier, Richmond, Olympia, Charleston, Madison, Cheyenne.

The trap: the capital is rarely the famous city

Most wrong answers are the state's biggest or best-known city. Make a "famous city ≠ capital" pile and drill it first:

  • New York → Albany (not NYC), California → Sacramento (not LA), Illinois → Springfield (not Chicago)
  • Pennsylvania → Harrisburg, Florida → Tallahassee, Texas → Austin
  • Washington → Olympia (not Seattle), Nevada → Carson City (not Las Vegas), Kentucky → Frankfort (not Louisville)
  • Michigan → Lansing (not Detroit), Missouri → Jefferson City, Delaware → Dover (not Wilmington)

Then flip the logic: the states where the big city is the capital (Phoenix, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, Indianapolis, Nashville, Salt Lake City, Honolulu) are your easy wins. The name of the state is the hint in Oklahoma City and Indianapolis.

Name collisions worth their own cards

  1. Charleston vs Columbia. Charleston is the capital of West Virginia; South Carolina's capital is Columbia, even though South Carolina has its own famous Charleston. Add a card: "South Carolina's Charleston — is it the capital?" Answer: no, Columbia.
  2. Columbia vs Columbus. One letter apart: Columbia = South Carolina, Columbus = Ohio. Same idea with Augusta: it is the capital of Maine. Augusta, Georgia is just a city; Georgia's capital is Atlanta.

A quick memory hook: four capitals honor presidents. Lincoln (Nebraska), Madison (Wisconsin), Jefferson City (Missouri) and Jackson (Mississippi). Learn them as a set.

How to study it

  • Shuffle from day one so the alphabetical order never becomes the answer.
  • Review both directions. "Which state's capital is Pierre?" is harder than "Capital of South Dakota?" and catches half-learned pairs. (Pierre is pronounced "peer".)
  • Split by region: New England, the South, the Midwest, the Mountain West, the Pacific. Ten cards per session is plenty.

Once the 50 states are solid, keep going with state capitals elsewhere. Our guide to the state capitals of Mexico, Brazil and India uses the same method.
