Band 7 and above on IELTS Academic is rarely decided by grammar alone. Examiners score Lexical Resource on whether you use precise, formal vocabulary naturally, and the Reading passages assume you already know it. The IELTS Academic Vocabulary deck on Flip It (code KK3772) packs 564 of these words into one place, each with a compact, exam-friendly definition. This guide shows you how to actually retain them.

What the 564 cards contain
The word list follows the classic academic corpus used across IELTS, university textbooks and research articles: the vocabulary that appears in almost every Reading passage and that raises the tone of a Task 2 essay. Every card has a single headword on the front and a definition on the back, sometimes with two senses when the word behaves as both noun and verb.
A sample of what you'll find:
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| Abolish | To formally put an end to a system, practice, or institution |
| Ambiguous | Open to more than one interpretation; not having one obvious meaning |
| Empirical | Based on observation or experience rather than theory |
| Facilitate | To make an action or process easier |
| Hypothesis | A supposition made as a basis for reasoning without assuming it to be true |
| Notwithstanding | Nevertheless; in spite of |
| Paradigm | A typical example or pattern; a worldview |
| Comprise | To consist of; to make up or constitute |
| Whereas | In contrast or comparison with the fact that |
| Attribute | A quality or feature regarded as characteristic; to regard as being caused by |
Across the deck you will cover, among many others: accumulate, adjacent, advocate, allocate, analogous, arbitrary, coherent, coincide, commodity, compensate, compile, concurrent, constrain, contradict, controversy, criteria, deduce, deviate, differentiate, diminish, discrete, displace, distort, empirical, entity, equate, erode, explicit, exploit, fluctuate, hierarchy, ideology, implicit, impose, incentive, incidence, infer, inherent, inhibit, integral, intrinsic, intervene, invoke, levy, manipulate, mediate, negate, offset, paradigm, parameter, phenomenon, precede, predominant, preliminary, presume, prohibit, qualitative, rational, reluctance, restrain, scope, subordinate, subsequent, subsidy, sustain, terminate, underlie, undertake, whereby and widespread.
The list also includes the connective words that IELTS writing examiners look for: furthermore, hence, likewise, nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, thereby, whereas, whereby, via.
A study plan that fits a test date
564 words is too many to cram, and too few to justify a year. With 8 weeks before the exam:
- Weeks 1-6: 15 new cards per day, in alphabetical or shuffled order. Flip It's spaced repetition brings back the ones you miss, so daily reviews stay around 20 minutes.
- Weeks 7-8: no new cards. Review only, and start pulling the words into writing practice (see the tips below).
Two tips specific to this deck
1. Group by "essay function", not by alphabet. Once you have seen a card once, tag it mentally into one of four jobs: cause and effect (induce, trigger, derive, consequent, attribute), contrast and concession (whereas, notwithstanding, nonetheless, contrary, deviate), measurement and data (aggregate, approximate, fluctuate, proportion, ratio, statistic, incidence) and argument (advocate, justify, contradict, presume, infer, hypothesis, empirical). This is exactly how you will need them in Task 2 and in the Reading "matching headings" questions.
2. Turn the back of the card into a sentence about IELTS itself. Definitions are easy to recognise and hard to reproduce. When you flip allocate ("to distribute resources or duties for a particular purpose"), say aloud: "I allocate forty minutes to Task 2." When you flip inherent, say: "There is an inherent risk in writing under 250 words." A sentence you produced yourself sticks far longer than the dictionary line, and it doubles as writing practice.
Watch for the two-sense cards
A number of headwords carry two meanings on the back, such as conduct ("to organize and carry out; the manner in which a person behaves"), project ("an individual enterprise; to estimate or forecast") or couple ("two individuals of the same sort considered together; to link or combine"). IELTS Reading loves to test the less common sense. When a card shows two definitions, make sure you can give both before marking it as known.
