Swedish Vocabulary: Top 100 Essential Words (deck KF2339, 97 cards) is a subtitle-frequency list, and it shows: no numbers, no days, no food, no colours. What you get instead is the glue of every spoken Swedish sentence — pronouns, modals, the verbs är, har, kan, ska and a string of small particles. That is exactly why it pays off fast, as long as you fix a handful of cards first.

What the 97 cards cover

Pronouns in subject and object form (jag/mig, du/dig, han/honom, hon/henne, vi/oss, ni/er, dem, reflexive sig), possessives (min/mitt, din, hans), question words (vad, vem, hur, när, varför), connectors (och, men, eller, som, om, så, än), adverbs (här, där, nu, då, igen, aldrig, kanske, bara, mycket, lite) and the core verbs: vara, ha, göra, gå, få, se, ta, vill, vet, tror, måste, behöver, blir, finns. Colloquial spellings nåt (något) and sa (sade) are included — good, that is how Swedes speak.

Five cards to repair before your first review

  • yeah → ju is wrong. Ju is a modal particle meaning "as you know / after all" (det är ju sant). "Yeah" is ja or japp.
  • the (definite) → den and the (plural) → de: Swedish puts "the" at the end of the noun (bil-en, hus-et, bilar-na). Den/det/de only precede a noun when an adjective sits in between (den stora bilen). Add that example to the hint.
  • de is also the missing word they — the deck has dem (them) but no card for "they". Both are pronounced dom, so write them in one card.
  • shall → ska: in modern Swedish ska mostly means "will / going to".
  • come → kom is the imperative or past tense ("came"); the infinitive is komma, and coming → kommer is simply the present tense.

Tip 1: pair the verbs by form

The deck scatters verbs: har/ha/hade, gör/göra, går/gå, får/få, ser/se, kommer/kom. Swedish present tense almost always ends in -r, and no verb changes with the person (jag är, du är, de är). Merge each set into one card — "gå / går / gick" — and you learn six verbs instead of fourteen scattered forms.

Tip 2: treat en/ett as a gender drill

Look at en/ett, min/mitt, ingen/inget, den/det: the deck is quietly teaching the common vs neuter split without ever saying so. Tag those eight cards "gender" and review them together; every Swedish noun you learn afterwards should go in as en bil, ett hus, never bare. Also add the reflexive possessive sin/sitt, missing here and impossible to avoid (han tog sin bil ≠ han tog hans bil).

Where to go next

The deck's hints are empty on all 97 cards, so record the pronunciation yourself (sj-sound, dom for de/dem). Then move on to the Swedish 1000 Words deck and the Swedish food and travel article; the Danish Top 100 guide covers the same gender trap in a sister language.
