Two things that make this vocabulary stick
Learn the building blocks, not the compounds. Swedish welds nouns together, so a handful of roots unlocks dozens of cards. Smör (butter) + gås gives smörgås (sandwich), which becomes smörgåsbord, smörgåstårta and räksmörgås. Bär (berry) explains blåbär, björnbär, vinbär and blåbärssoppa. Korv covers fläskkorv and blodkorv; paj covers äppelpaj, blåbärspaj and smulpaj. Drill the roots — smör, bär, korv, sylt, gröt, soppa, bulle, kaka, tårta — and the long words stop looking long.
Tie the seasonal words to their occasion. Several cards only ever appear on one date, and that date is the memory hook: lussekatt at Lucia in December, julskinka, julmust and julbord at Christmas, semla before Lent, kräftskiva in August with snaps, surströmming at the end of summer. Grouping them as a calendar rather than a list halves the review time.
One caution the deck exposes: tack is the back of both thank you and please, and smörgås answers both sandwich and open sandwich. When a card comes back twice with different English fronts, treat it as one Swedish word with a wider range rather than two things to memorize.
