Thai script looks intimidating until you notice that every consonant comes with a built-in mnemonic: its name is a word. ก is ko kai, the "k" of kai (chicken). Thai Alphabet & Pronunciation (GS9866) packs that system into 36 cards: 21 consonants, 2 diacritics, 8 vowel forms and the numerals ๐–๔. Here is how to turn it into reading ability rather than a list of pictures.

What the deck actually covers

FrontBackClass
ก (ko kai)/k/ — chickenMid
ข (kho khai)/kʰ/ — eggHigh
ค (kho khwai)/kʰ/ — buffaloLow
ด (do dek)/d/ — childMid
ต (to tao)/t/ — turtleMid
ร (ro ruea)/r/, final /n/ — boatLow
อ (o ang)/ʔ/, silent vowel carrier — basinMid
◌์ (thanthakhat)marks a silent letter—
เ◌ (sara e)long /eː/, written left of the consonant—

You'll learn: the mid-class set ก จ ด ต บ ป อ, the high-class ข ส ห, the low-class ค ง ช ท น พ ม ย ร ล ว, aspirated vs unaspirated stops (/k/–/kʰ/, /t/–/tʰ/, /p/–/pʰ/, /tɕ/–/tɕʰ/), final-position changes (ร and ล both end as /n/), the short/long vowel pairs ะ/า, ิ/ี, ุ/ู, the left-side vowels เ and แ, mai taikhu ◌็ (vowel shortener) and the Thai digits zero to four.

Learn the class with the letter, not after it

The hint on each consonant card (Mid-class, High-class, Low-class) is the most valuable field in the deck, because consonant class decides the tone of every syllable. Say it out loud as part of the answer: kho khai, kʰ, egg, high. ข and ค are the proof: same sound, different class, so the same tone mark gives a different tone. Memorising them as one letter is the classic beginner mistake.

Drill the look-alikes as pairs

Thai pairs differ by one loop or one notch. Pull these into side-by-side reviews:

  • ด / ต (d vs t) — the notch at the top
  • บ / ป (b vs p) — the tail
  • ข / ช — the tail on the left
  • ม / น / ท — loop placement

Combine this with the three-way stop contrast ด /d/ – ต /t/ – ท /tʰ/: English speakers hear ต as "d", so check the IPA on the back every time.

What to add next

This is a starter set. The modern alphabet has 44 consonants (42 in use), so missing letters such as ฉ, ถ, ผ, ฝ, ฟ, ศ and ษ will show up in your first real sentences. Two gaps matter most:

  1. Tone marks — mai ek ◌่, mai tho ◌้, mai tri ◌๊, mai chattawa ◌๋ — are absent. Write four cards, then a fifth on live vs dead syllables; without them the class hints have nothing to act on.
  2. Numerals ๕–๙ stop at ๔. Add five cards so you can read prices and dates.

Once the script clicks, move to words: our guide to Thai Top 100 Essential Words gives you real vocabulary to sound out letter by letter.
