Studying database design in French, for a BTS SIO, a DUT/BUT informatique or a French-speaking job interview? YU3613 – SQL : conception de bases de données et normalisation is the French edition of Flip It's normalization deck: 32 cards with English fronts (Third Normal Form (3NF), Superkey) and French answers. The English version is reviewed in Database Normalization Study Guide; this article covers what is specific to the French deck.

Sample cards

RectoVerso
According to C.J. Date, when is a database truly 'normalized'?Seulement en cinquième forme normale (5NF)

Notions covered

Study tips for the French edition

Translate the fronts into your exam's vocabulary. French courses rarely say "2NF" alone: in the Merise tradition, 2NF means every dépendance fonctionnelle on the key is élémentaire (no dependency on part of a composite key), and 3NF means every one is directe (no transitive path). Add those two words to cards 6 and 7, and write reverse cards in French (« superclé minimale » → candidate key, « attribut non clé » → non-prime attribute): the English fronts never make you produce the French term a jury expects.

Learn the keys before the forms. Cards 13-16 (clé primaire, composite, candidate, superclé) come after the normal forms that are defined with them. Move them to the top and add the missing card: an attribut premier is one that belongs to some candidate key.

Fix card 11. The French back says 5NF avoids "les problèmes de décomposition sans perte", which inverts the idea: lossless decomposition is the goal, not the problem. Rewrite it as « toute dépendance de jointure est impliquée par les clés candidates ».

Tag the theory. Card 25 says it: beyond 4NF is mostly academic. Review EKNF, ETNF, DKNF and 6NF less often than 1NF → BCNF.

To practise querying in French, continue with SQL in French: queries, joins and aggregates.
