HSK 6 Vocabulary: Flashcards for the Final Stretch of Mandarin Fluency
HSK 6 is where Mandarin study stops feeling like a course and starts feeling like reading. The words on this list rarely show up in textbook dialogues — they show up in news articles, novels, and the kind of conversation native speakers have with each other, not with learners. The HSK 6 Vocabulary deck (code LU6410) on Flip It covers 444 cards, each pairing an English gloss with the Mandarin term and pinyin, ready to drop into a spaced-repetition routine.

Why HSK 6 vocabulary is a different animal
At HSK 4 and 5 you're still building everyday fluency. HSK 6 words are denser and more abstract: fortifications, biology, geology, emotional nuance, formal writing. A single card can carry a whole register shift — the difference between saying something is "sad" and saying it is "tragic" or "regrettable" in Mandarin often comes down to a character you've simply never seen before. That's exactly the gap this deck targets.
A sample of what's inside
| English | Mandarin (pinyin) |
|---|---|
| cancer | 癌症 (áizhèng) |
| narrow | 狭隘 (xiá'ài) |
| fortress | 堡垒 (bǎolěi) |
| monument | 纪念碑 (jìniànbēi) |
| leopard | 猎豹 (lièbào) |
| currency | 货币 (huòbì) |
| jade green | 碧绿 (bìlǜ) |
| tired (worn out) | 疲惫 (píbèi) |
| soft-shelled turtle | 甲鱼 (jiǎyú) |
| plaque | 匾额 (biǎn'é) |
Across the full 444 cards you'll pick up terms spanning wildlife (猎豹, 甲鱼), architecture and history (堡垒, 纪念碑, 匾额), finance (货币), medicine (癌症), and the finer emotional and descriptive vocabulary (狭隘, 悲惨, 悲哀) that separates intermediate speakers from advanced readers. Several entries also isolate common verb roots, so you drill the character alongside its compound forms instead of memorizing them as unrelated words.
How to actually learn this list
- Sort by domain first, not alphabetically. Group cards mentally into clusters — animals, emotions, construction, money — before you start reviewing. HSK 6 words connect to each other in ways HSK 1-3 words don't, and clustering builds those associations instead of fighting them.
- Say the pinyin out loud before flipping. Tone errors compound fast at this level because so many characters share components; reading silently lets you fool yourself into thinking you know a tone you don't.
- Review flashcards for 15-20 minutes a day rather than cramming. At 444 cards, spaced repetition beats marathon sessions — Flip It's algorithm will resurface the words you keep missing far more often than the ones you've nailed.
- Write the character once per new session. Recognition and production are different skills at HSK 6; even a quick handwritten stroke-order pass locks in characters that look similar (碧 vs 壁, for example).
Tips specific to this deck
Because several HSK 6 words are compound nouns built from a familiar character plus a rare one (货币, 纪念碑, 疲惫), a fast win is drilling the rare half of the compound on its own first. Once 币, 碑, and 惫 are solid individually, the full words stick almost automatically. It's a shortcut worth using across the whole deck.
