Chengyu (成语) are four-character idioms that pack a mini-story into a handful of characters — using them correctly is one of the clearest signs of advanced Mandarin fluency. This deck (code SY3027) covers 148 chengyu and proverbs, each paired with its modern meaning and the literal, often historical, image behind it.

Why the literal meaning matters

Every card in this deck includes a "litt." hint — the word-for-word translation — because that's how chengyu actually stick. 守株待兔 (shǒu zhū dài tù) doesn't just mean "wait idly for a reward"; it literally means "guard a tree-stump to wait for rabbits," from a farmer who once saw a rabbit run into a stump and then waited by that stump forever, hoping for a second one. The image is the memory hook — drop it and you're just memorizing four random syllables.

What's in the deck

  • Legend-based idioms: 破釜沉舟 (burn one's bridges), 塞翁失馬 (a blessing in disguise), 完璧歸趙 (return something intact to its owner), 臥虎藏龍 (hidden talent or danger), 邯鄲學步 (imitate others and lose your own abilities)
  • A full number set (1-10) of blessing idioms: 一帆風順, 二龍騰飛, 三陽開泰, 四季平安, 五福臨門, 六六大順, 七星高照, 八方來財, 九九同心, 十全十美 — the phrases you'll hear during Chinese New Year
  • Animal-based idioms: 井底之蛙 (frog in a well = limited outlook), 狼吞虎嚥 (devour like a wolf), 兩虎相爭 (two tigers fight), 對牛彈琴 (play the lute to a cow)
  • Everyday wisdom proverbs: 事實勝於雄辯 (actions speak louder than words), 趁熱打鐵 (strike while the iron is hot), 物以類聚 (birds of a feather flock together), 光陰似箭 (time flies)

How to memorize chengyu efficiently

  1. Learn the story, not the string of characters. For legend-based idioms (守株待兔, 塞翁失馬, 邯鄲學步), spend a few seconds picturing the scene behind the phrase before trying to recall the meaning — the backstory does the memorization work for you.
  2. Cluster the number-pattern idioms together, from 一帆風順 through 十全十美. They form a natural sequence for Chinese New Year greetings, and learning them in order (1 through 10) is far easier than picking them up scattered across a full deck.

Chengyu show up constantly in news, essays, and formal speech, so recognizing even 50-60 of the most common ones will noticeably change how much real-world Chinese text you understand.
