HSK 3 is where Mandarin stops feeling like memorized survival phrases and starts feeling like a language you can actually use — enough vocabulary to hold a basic conversation, read simple text, and describe daily life without switching back to English mid-sentence. The HSK 3 Vocabulary deck on Flip It (code DI7291, 518 cards, English front / Chinese and pinyin back) covers the official word list for that exact jump.

Why HSK 3 is a different kind of challenge
HSK 1 and 2 vocabulary is mostly nouns and greetings you can point at or act out. HSK 3 adds abstract adjectives (lively, diligent), verbs of thought and process (to solve, to translate, to congratulate), and words that only make sense in context rather than isolation. That shift means flashcards alone aren't enough — you need to see each word inside a sentence at some point — but a well-ordered deck is still the fastest way to get the raw vocabulary into your head before you start building sentences with it.
Sample cards from the deck
| English (front) | Chinese + pinyin (back) |
|---|---|
| to help | 帮助 (bāngzhù) |
| to translate | 翻译 (fānyì) |
| to congratulate | 恭喜 (gōngxǐ) |
| lively | 活泼 (huópō) |
| to solve | 解决 (jiějué) |
| fast | 快 (kuài) |
| busy | 忙 (máng) |
| to shoot (a photo) | 拍 (pāi) |
| diligent | 勤奋 (qínfèn) |
| snake | 蛇 (shé) |
You'll notice pinyin is included on every card — that's deliberate. At HSK 3, tone precision starts to matter for being understood (忙 máng "busy" and 慢 màn "slow" are one tone apart and easy to mix up under pressure), so reviewing the romanization alongside the character trains pronunciation and recognition at the same time instead of treating them as separate tasks later.
Words you'll actually reach for
Across the list, three clusters show up again and again: daily-life verbs (帮助 to help, 解决 to solve, 拍 to shoot/take a photo), social vocabulary (恭喜 to congratulate, 客气 to be polite), and descriptive adjectives (活泼 lively, 勤奋 diligent, 快 fast). Learning these as clusters — rather than strictly in list order — makes it easier to build small sentences early, like 他很勤奋 (he's diligent) or 恭喜你! (congratulations!), which does more for retention than reviewing isolated cards forever.
A study rhythm for this deck
- 25 cards a day gets you through all 518 in about three weeks — a realistic pace for HSK 3 prep without burning out.
- Say the pinyin out loud before flipping the card, not after — this forces active recall of both sound and tone instead of passive recognition.
- Build one sentence per new verb or adjective you learn (even a two-word phrase counts) — HSK 3's abstract words don't stick from repetition alone the way concrete nouns do.
- Retest missed cards same-day, then again 48 hours later — the words that trip you up on first pass are disproportionately the ones that reappear on the actual HSK 3 exam.
One practical note: a small number of entries in this list are proper compound terms rather than single concepts (structure words like 经过 (to pass through) or 顺便 (conveniently, in passing)) — if a card feels oddly abstract compared to its neighbors, that's normal for this level, not a sign you're misunderstanding it.
If you're earlier in the HSK track or exploring Mandarin from a different base language, Flip It's Spanish-to-Chinese and French-to-Chinese frequency decks are good complements for building raw vocabulary breadth alongside this exam-focused list.
