Devanagari looks dense, but it is one of the most logical scripts ever designed: letters are ordered by where your mouth makes the sound. The Devanagari Script & Pronunciation deck (code XH8650, 66 cards) follows exactly that order — the classical varṇamālā — with IAST transliteration on every back. Use it right and you can read Hindi signs within a couple of weeks.

What's inside
11 independent vowels (अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ), 25 stop consonants in five rows — velar (kaṇṭhya), palatal (tālavya), retroflex (mūrdhanya), dental (dantya), labial (oṣṭhya) — semivowels य र ल व, sibilants श ष स ह, conjuncts क्ष and ज्ञ, nukta letters क़ ख़ ज़ फ़, digits ० to ९, and the diacritics anusvara (ं), visarga (ः), candrabindu (ँ), danda (।), double-danda (॥) and halant/virama (्).
Sample cards
| Front | Back | Hint |
|---|---|---|
| अ | a | pronounced [ɐ] |
| आ | ā | long 'a' [aː] |
| ट | ṭa | retroflex |
| त | ta | dental |
| ञ | ña | palatal |
| ज़ | za | nukta |
| ् | halant / virama | removes the inherent 'a' |
| ँ | candrabindu | vowel nasalization |
How to learn it efficiently
Learn the grid, not 66 letters. Each stop row runs the same pattern: unaspirated voiceless, aspirated voiceless, unaspirated voiced, aspirated voiced, nasal (क ख ग घ ङ). Memorize one row cold, then the other four are just new mouth positions. The pair that trips English speakers is ट vs त: tongue curled back vs tongue on the teeth. Say ṭa / ta aloud on every review.
Add what Hindi readers actually need. This deck teaches the Sanskrit alphabet; four Hindi gaps are worth writing yourself:
- Mātrās (vowel signs). Outside a word's first letter, vowels appear as signs: का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ. None are in the deck — write one card per vowel, using क as carrier.
- ड़ and ढ़ (ṛa, ṛha), the flapped sounds in बड़ा and पढ़ना. Far more common in Hindi than ङ or ञ.
- Schwa deletion. The inherent a is often silent: कमरा is kamrā, not kamarā; राम is rām. The halant card alone won't teach this.
- Hindi values: ऋ is said "ri" (ऋषि riṣi), and व drifts between v and w.
Two fixes: the nukta hints are cut off at "used for" — finish them ("Perso-Arabic and English sounds: qalam, xabar, zarūr, fōn"). And add ऑ (the o of doctor = डॉक्टर), now standard in Hindi spelling.
