Network+ rewards two kinds of memory: hard recall (port numbers, address ranges, cable specs) and quick comparison (hub vs switch, IDS vs IPS, stateful vs stateless). The CompTIA Network+ deck (code QM2054, 99 cards) leans heavily on both, which makes it a strong drill set for the current N10-009 exam — as long as you know where it stops.

Cards worth knowing cold
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| What are the 4 steps of the DHCP process? | DORA: Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledge |
| What port does RDP use? | Port 3389 |
| What is the private IP range for Class B? | 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255 (172.16.0.0/12) |
| What is the difference between a switch and a router? | Switch: Layer 2, MAC addresses, same network; Router: Layer 3, IP addresses, different networks |
| What is jitter? | Variation in packet arrival time; inconsistent latency that affects real-time communications |
| What is a collision domain? | Network segment where packets can collide; switches create separate collision domains per port |
| What cable type is Cat6? | Up to 10 Gbps at 250 MHz over 55 meters (1 Gbps over 100 m) |
| What is the difference between single-mode and multi-mode fiber? | Single-mode: smaller core, km distances, laser; Multi-mode: larger core, shorter distances, LED |
| What is the difference between IDS and IPS? | IDS: passive, alerts only; IPS: active, blocks threats automatically |
What the deck covers
The seven OSI layers one card each, MAC addresses, TCP vs UDP, eleven well-known ports (HTTP 80, HTTPS 443, FTP 20/21, SSH 22, Telnet 23, SMTP 25, DNS 53, DHCP 67/68, POP3 110, IMAP 143, RDP 3389), subnet masks, CIDR, NAT, loopback, ARP, VLANs, default gateway, QoS, VoIP, 802.11 bands and WPA2/WPA3, PoE, STP, site-to-site vs client-to-site VPN, IPsec, TLS, DMZ, MTU, bandwidth vs throughput, CSMA/CD vs CSMA/CA, Cat5e/Cat6, UTP vs STP, RJ-45, T568A/B, crossover vs straight-through, SNMP, Syslog, NetFlow, ping, tracert, nslookup, ipconfig, netstat, port forwarding, ACLs, symmetric vs asymmetric encryption, load balancing, link aggregation, proxies and IPv6.
Study plan: drill in pairs, then fill the gaps
Learn the comparison cards as contrasts. About a quarter of the backs are "X vs Y" (cards 10, 37, 38, 43, 54, 58, 65, 72, 74, 77-78, 90, 96). Before flipping, say the one deciding trait aloud — "layer", "state", "who it connects" — then check. Exam distractors are almost always the twin concept.
Watch the acronym collision. STP appears twice with two meanings: Spanning Tree Protocol (card 52) and Shielded Twisted Pair (card 72). Add "(switching)" or "(cabling)" to each front so you never answer the wrong one.
Then write the cards the deck lacks. N10-009 weights Network Troubleshooting at 24%, yet the deck has no card for CompTIA's seven-step troubleshooting methodology (identify the problem → theory → test → plan → implement or escalate → verify and prevent → document). Also add the missing exam ports — NTP 123, SNMP 161/162, LDAP 389, SMB 445, LDAPS 636, Syslog 514 — and a Wi-Fi 6E card: card 46 stops at 2.4/5 GHz, but 802.11ax now also runs in 6 GHz. Treat classful defaults (cards 23-25), crossover cables and the 5-4-3 rule as legacy context: modern switches use auto-MDI-X.
