The Arabic Vocabulary A1 — Essentials deck (code EB4217, 260 cards) is a frequency list, and it shows: almost no nouns for objects, lots of tiny grammar words — لا، من، في، على، هل، لقد، سوف. That is the right foundation for reading and listening, but the raw list has some traps. Here is how to study it efficiently.

What you'll master

Tip 1: study cards 1-87 first, then suspend the replay

From card 88 the deck replays the opening: لا، على، هل، يا، لقد، هذه، فقط، شيء، الذي، يجب، لك، لي، قد، هي، حتى، التي، تلك، ربما، عليك، به، بخير، الوقت، أكثر، يمكن، لذا، كما… — about 30 duplicates between cards 88 and 122, with slightly different English glosses. Learn the first version, then suspend the second; keep only the new items hiding in that range (أجل, إنّ). Watch one pair that is not a duplicate: كنت is both “I was” (kuntu, card 27) and “you were” (kunta, card 95) — only the vowel marks differ, so add them to the backs.

Tip 2: turn the suffix cards into three tables

Around 40 cards are just a preposition plus a pronoun suffix, scattered across the deck. Rebuild them as paradigms and you learn all of them at once:

  • لـ (for/to): لي، لك، له، لها، لنا، لكم
  • مع (with): معي، معك، معه
  • على (on): عليّ، عليك، عليه، عليها، علينا — plus the idiom عليك = “you must”
  • من / عن / بـ: مني، منك، منه، عنه، بي، به، بها

Same logic for لدي، لديك، لديه، لدينا = “I / you / he / we have”.

Three cleanup notes

  • Spelling variants are not new words: انا / أنا and انت / أنت are labelled “informal” but are just the same word without the hamza; شئ / شيء, الذى / الذي, حسنا / حسناً, شكرا / شكراً likewise. Keep one of each.
  • Fix the glosses: هل is a yes/no question marker, not “is, are, do”; يكن only appears after لم (لم يكن = “was not”); بأس = “okay” only inside لا بأس; أن means “that” (conjunction), not “this”.
  • The list comes from TV subtitles, so اللعنة، الجحيم، إلهي are in there. Your call.

When these 260 feel automatic, continue with the Arabic A2 study guide.
