Most travel phrasebooks pick a side: Lisbon or Rio. The Portuguese Travel & Daily Life deck (code HO0111, 256 cards) gives you both at once, often on the same card — Ônibus / Autocarro, Banheiro / Casa de banho. That is useful once you know which half belongs to which country, and confusing if you don't. Here is how to turn it into a clean, trip-ready set.

What the 256 cards actually contain

The deck is four blocks stitched together:

  1. Cards 1-199 — the travel core: greetings, survival phrases, food, transport, places, adjectives and 16 verbs.
  2. Cards 200-228 — numbers again: zero, 11-19, 60-90, hundreds up to novecentos, um milhão, um bilhão (BR) / mil milhões (PT).
  3. Cards 229-244 — colours, with masculine/feminine forms.
  4. Cards 245-256 — months, all lowercase (correct in both countries since the 1990 spelling agreement).

You'll cover: Com licença, Desculpe, Onde fica…?, Quanto custa?, Socorro!, conta, cardápio, ementa, bilhete, passagem, multibanco, farmácia, segunda-feira, esquerda, direita, em frente, aberto, fechado, grátis, ocupado, comboio, mochila, chegar, precisar, querer, ser, estar, Estou perdido/perdida, igreja, praça, ponte, lembrança, quinhentos, castanho, marrom, dourado.

Tip 1: tag every slash card BR or PT

Only a few cards say which variant is which (bilhão, marrom). The rest leave it to you. Rule of thumb: the first form is usually Brazilian, the second European — Suco / Sumo, Trem / Comboio, Metrô / Metro, Ônibus / Autocarro. Some single-answer cards are Brazil-only without saying so: Ponto de ônibus, Estação de trem, Meu nome é…, Você fala inglês?, Leste (Portugal says Este). Going to Lisbon? Edit those backs to paragem de autocarro, estação de comboios, Chamo-me…, Fala inglês? Going to Brazil? Delete the PT halves rather than learning both.

Tip 2: kill the collisions before they cost you reviews

  • Cards 86-87 (Um / Uma, Dois / Duas) are repeated as cards 201-202 — suspend the second pair.
  • Luggage and Suitcase both accept Mala; Free (no cost) → Grátis and Available / Free → Livre look identical from the front. Keep the parentheses visible and add an example: entrada grátis vs quarto livre.
  • Boa noite covers both evening and night — there is no separate “good evening”.

A 3-week plan

  • Week 1: cards 1-66 (phrases + food) — enough to order, pay and ask for the casa de banho.
  • Week 2: cards 102-199 (directions, adjectives, transport, verbs). Drill ser vs estar with Estou perdido.
  • Week 3: merge both number blocks (86-101 + 200-228), then colours and months as a quick finish.

Once the travel basics stick, move on to the European Portuguese 300 everyday words study plan to build real conversational range.
