Deck OT2127 — "Academy Awards: Best Picture Winners" holds 50 cards, and almost none of them ask you to name a winner. What it teaches is the award itself: who receives the statuette, how the ballots are counted, which single film holds each superlative, and why Faye Dunaway read the wrong title in 2017. Read it as Best Picture, explained and it is very good at what it does.

Everything the 50 cards cover

AMPAS and the 1929 debut; Outstanding Picture versus Unique and Artistic Picture at the first ceremony; the 1950 switch from companies to producers and the three-producer cap added in 1999 after Shakespeare in Love; Spielberg's 14 nominations for one win; Kathleen Kennedy's 8 nominations and none; Sam Spiegel and Saul Zaentz tied at three wins; the 70 of 97 winners that also took Best Director and the six that won with no directing nomination (Wings, Grand Hotel, Driving Miss Daisy, Argo, Green Book, CODA); the 2009 expansion to ten nominees after The Dark Knight and WALL-E were snubbed, and the 2022 return to a fixed ten; the genre firsts and onlys — Midnight Cowboy (X, later R), The Silence of the Lambs, Titanic, The Artist, The Return of the King, The Shape of Water, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Godfather Part II; the three animated nominees that all lost; MGM's five wins; Academy Aperture 2025 diversity standards; the Crash backlash; the Dolby Theatre Grand Staircase.

The winners list is missing — build it yourself

The deck names roughly twenty films, always as the answer to an "only" or "first" question. For the roll call the title promises, card 44 hands you the hook: the Grand Staircase columns at the Dolby Theatre carry every winner since the award began. Don't write 97 cards. Write ten — one per decade, winners listed on the back. Decade-sized chunks are how quiz players actually store this.

Date-stamp the arithmetic

Three cards freeze counts at the 2025 ceremony: 97 winners out of 621 nominated films, 21 non-English-language nominees, three animated nominees. Two of those move most Marches, so put "as of 2025" in the front text now.

Two quick repairs: cards 36, 37 and 38 split the La La Land / Moonlight envelope into three near-identical prompts — merge them into one naming Beatty, Dunaway and the duplicate Best Actress envelope. And card 15 accepts any one of six films; rewrite the front as "list all six" so it has a single gradable answer.

Finally, two gaps worth a card each. Preferential voting is named but never explained, though redistributing second choices is exactly why a consensus film beats a polarising one. And Academy Aperture 2025 appears without its four standards.
