Forty-eight films, two cards each: one for the director, one for the plot in a sentence. That is the whole design of the Classic Movies: Plots & Directors deck on Flip It (deck code ML8016, 96 cards), which makes it a fast route through the film-studies canon for an exam or a quiz.

The canon covered

From the silent era to 2008: Battleship Potemkin, Sunrise, City Lights, Modern Times, M, Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Double Indemnity, It's a Wonderful Life, Bicycle Thieves, The Third Man, Rashomon, Singing in the Rain, Tokyo Story, Seven Samurai, Rear Window, On the Waterfront, The Searchers, 12 Angry Men, Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Vertigo, Touch of Evil, Some Like It Hot, North by Northwest, Psycho, The Apartment, Lawrence of Arabia, 8½, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Chinatown, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption and The Dark Knight.

Learn the directors as clusters, not as 48 facts

Several names carry more than one film, and grouping them cuts the workload roughly in half:

  • Alfred Hitchcock (4): Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho
  • Stanley Kubrick (3): Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange
  • Billy Wilder (3): Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment
  • Charlie Chaplin (2): City Lights, Modern Times
  • Orson Welles (2): Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil
  • Akira Kurosawa (2): Rashomon, Seven Samurai
  • Ingmar Bergman (2): Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal (both 1957)
  • David Lean (2): The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia
  • Francis Ford Coppola (2): The Godfather, Apocalypse Now
  • Martin Scorsese (2): Taxi Driver, Raging Bull
  • Victor Fleming (2): Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, both 1939

Master those eleven directors and 26 of the 48 director cards are done. The remaining one-offs are the classic quiz traps: The Empire Strikes Back is Irvin Kershner, not George Lucas; The Shawshank Redemption is Frank Darabont; The Exorcist is William Friedkin; On the Waterfront is Elia Kazan; The Searchers is John Ford.

Two tips for the plot cards

Read the plot card as a logline and reverse it. After a first pass, flip the deck and quiz yourself from plot to title. "A serial child murderer is hunted by both the police and the criminal underworld" should trigger M (1931) instantly; that direction is what quiz questions actually test.

Use the year on the front as a second retrieval cue. Only the director cards carry the release year. Say it aloud when you answer the plot card ("Vertigo, 1958, Hitchcock"), so the three facts get stored together and each one can pull the other two back.

With 96 short cards, the whole deck fits in three 15-minute sessions. Sign in at flip-it.app and search the library for deck code ML8016, "Classic Movies: Plots & Directors".
