Quiz night, art-history exams and literature surveys all ask the same question in different clothes: who made this? The Famous Artists & Writers deck (code SM6511) answers it 99 times: 30 paintings, 66 books and plays, 3 sculptures, each card giving the creator and the date. This guide shows how to memorize the whole set without it turning into a list of random names.

Learn creators, not cards

Many creators appear twice or three times, which is your shortcut. Merge those cards into one mental fact: Michelangelo = ceiling + Creation of Adam + David; Orwell = 1984 + Animal Farm; Hemingway = Old Man and the Sea + For Whom the Bell Tolls + The Sun Also Rises; Hugo = Les Misérables + Hunchback; Kafka = Metamorphosis + The Trial; Camus = The Stranger + The Plague; Tolstoy = War and Peace + Anna Karenina. Fourteen such clusters cover roughly 40 of the 99 cards.

Then sort the singletons by century, because the dates on the back are half the answer:

  • Antiquity to 1500: Gilgamesh, Homer, Beowulf, Dante, Chaucer, Van Eyck (1434), Botticelli (c. 1485), Bosch.
  • 1500-1700: Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Milton.
  • 1800s: Goya, Austen, Shelley, Delacroix, Hugo, Dumas, Brontës, Melville, Flaubert, Manet, Monet, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Twain, Seurat, Van Gogh, Wilde, Munch, Stoker.
  • 1900-1950: Klimt, Proust, Joyce, Kafka, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Huxley, Dalí, Wood, Picasso, Steinbeck, Tolkien, Hopper, Camus, Sartre, Orwell, Miller, Williams.
  • After 1950: Pollock, Salinger, Bradbury, Golding, Beckett, Lewis, Warhol, Kesey, Heller, Magritte, García Márquez, Vonnegut, Walker, Atwood, Morrison, Rowling.

Two traps in this deck

  • Two Kisses: Klimt painted The Kiss (1907-1908); Rodin sculpted The Kiss (1882). The front tells you which by the verb.
  • Twin dates: Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are both 1847 (Charlotte vs Emily Brontë); The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers are both 1844 (Dumas). Learn the pair together and the date will never be the confusing part.
