Most Ancient Greek courses front-load grammar and leave vocabulary to chance. The Ancient Greek Essential Vocabulary deck (code IK9107, 285 cards) on Flip It does the opposite: it gives you the words that appear on nearly every page of Homer, Plato and the New Testament, each with polytonic spelling and a transliteration so you can pronounce it before you can parse it.

What a card looks like

Every card goes English → Greek, with the romanisation in brackets. Prepositions also show the case they govern, which is the detail most beginners forget:

The 285 words, block by block

The deck runs in thematic blocks, so you can learn one part of speech at a time:

  • Pronouns: ἐγώ, σύ, αὐτός/αὐτή/αὐτό, ἡμεῖς, ὑμεῖς, plus demonstratives οὗτος, ἐκεῖνος and the relative ὅς/ἥ/ὅ.

  • Numbers and quantity: εἷς to δέκα, εἴκοσι, ἑκατόν, χίλιοι, ordinals πρῶτος to ἔσχατος, πᾶς, τις, πολλοί, ὀλίγοι, ἄλλος.
  • Question words, conjunctions, negation: τί, πότε, ποῦ, πῶς, διὰ τί, καί, ἤ, δέ/ἀλλά, εἰ, ὅτι, οὐ/μή, ναί, μέν, ἄρα.
  • Prepositions with their cases: ἐν + dat., ἐπί, πρός + acc., σύν + dat., διά, περί, ὑπέρ, πρό, κατά + gen. (against) vs κατά + acc. (according to), μετά + acc. (after) vs μετά + gen. (with), ἄνευ + gen.
  • Philosophical and civic vocabulary:

Two tips specific to this deck

Treat the case on preposition cards as part of the answer. The card for with reads σύν + dat. / μετά + gen.; the card for after reads μετά + acc. Same preposition, different case, opposite meaning. When you flip a preposition card, say the case out loud and count it wrong if you skipped it. This is where most first-year exam marks are lost.

Use the English derivatives hidden in the back text. ψυχή gives psychology, χρόνος gives chronology, ἵππος gives hippodrome, δύναμις gives dynamic, ἐκκλησία gives ecclesiastical, οὐσία sits behind Aristotle's substance. Around a third of the 285 words have a living English descendant; noticing it turns a random string into a word you already half-know.

Suggested order

Run the deck in its natural blocks: pronouns and verbs first (they carry every sentence), then nouns, then the adjective pairs, and leave the philosophical terms for last, when λόγος and δύναμις already feel familiar. Missed cards come back sooner through spaced repetition, so the double-form entries (γιγνώσκω/οἶδα, βίος/ζωή, οὐ/μή) will get the extra passes they need.

If you are still shaky on the letters themselves, start with the Greek alphabet in 24 cards, which covers ancient versus modern pronunciation of every letter. Then log in to Flip It, search deck code IK9107 in the library, and begin with ἐγώ.
