Deck IH4515 "Polish Vocabulary: Top 100 Essential Words" holds 98 cards built from word frequency in spoken Polish. Do not expect numbers, days, food or greetings (only proszę, dziękuję and przepraszam make it in). What you get instead is the glue of every Polish sentence: negation, prepositions, pronouns in their case forms and the most-used verbs. Learn it as a sentence skeleton, not a word list.

What's inside

  • Prepositions: w, na, z / ze, do, o, za, po, dla, od, przez.
  • Question words: co, jak, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego, kto, czy.
  • Pronouns in cases: ja, mnie, mi, ty, cię, ci, ciebie, on, go, mu, jego, ona, jej, ją, nas, ich, sobie.
  • Verbs as scattered forms: być (jest, jestem, jesteś, są, był, było, będzie, być), mieć (ma, mam, masz, mamy), móc (mogę, możesz, może), chcieć (chcę, chcesz), wiedzieć (wiem, wiesz), musieć (muszę).
  • Adverbs and particles: już, jeszcze, teraz, tylko, też, nawet, nigdy, naprawdę, bardzo, dobrze, chyba, więc, bo.

Cards to fix before your first review

  • Card 16, a (article) → a, is wrong. Polish has no articles. A is a conjunction meaning "and / whereas" with a contrast: Ja pracuję, a on śpi. Rewrite the front.
  • Card 92, alright/OK → porządku, and card 96, at home → domu, are fragments. The frequency list split the phrases: the real items are w porządku and w domu. Put the preposition back.
  • Card 78, no, is a false friend: it means "well / yeah", never "no" (that is nie, card 1).
  • Card 29, może, is glossed only as "maybe", but it is also "he/she can", the third member of mogę / możesz (cards 52, 87).
  • Cards 8 and 63: ze is just z before hard clusters (ze mną), not a separate word.

Two tips that matter for Polish

Turn the pronoun cards into one table. Twenty cards are case forms that the deck never groups. Make a grid (nominative / genitive / dative / accusative) and place each: ty → ciebie / ci / cię, on → jego / mu / go. Then learn the rule behind the pairs: the short forms (mi, ci, cię, go, mu) are unstressed and never start a sentence; the long forms (mnie, ciebie, jego) carry emphasis or follow a preposition.

Pan and pani are "you", not titles. Cards 45 and 73 gloss them as Mr. and Madam, but their daily use is the polite you with a third-person verb: Czy pan wie? ("Do you know?", literally "Does the gentleman know?"). Add that sentence to the back; you will need it with any stranger. Also note that dobra (card 88) and mój (card 75) are shown in one gender only; the deck marks gender nowhere.
