Polish has a reputation for being impossible, but most of that comes from three systems hitting you at once: seven cases, a gender split inside the masculine, and verb aspect. Deck UN6572 — Polish Cases & Verb Aspects lays all three out in 95 reference cards, from the case list to participles and prepositions.

'There is/are' constructionjest.../są... + nominative; negative: nie ma + genitive (always singular)
Numbers 5+ ruleNoun genitive plural, phrase neuter singular (5 kotów stało)
Dative/locative/instrumental plural-om, -ami, -ach (ALL genders)
Pronouns after prepositionsAdd n-: jego → niego, ją → nią, ich → nich

Everything the deck covers

Mianownik, dopełniacz, celownik, biernik, narzędnik, miejscownik, wołacz; masculine personal / animate / inanimate and the niemęskoosobowy plural; dual relics (oczy, uszy, ręce); imperfective vs perfective, compound future będę robić, simple future zjem; past tense in -ł with gender agreement (byłem/byłam), conditional byłbym, imperatives (bierz, bierzcie, niech); się, swój, który, pan/pani/państwo; pro-drop and flexible SVO; nie ma + genitive; adjective comparatives (-szy, bardziej, naj-); jeden, dwaj/trzej/czterej, collective dwoje/troje, kilka, dużo; genitive -a vs -u, dative -owi vs -u, vocative endings; participles in -ąc, -ący, -ny/-ty, -wszy; verbal nouns like śpiewanie; and the w/na/z/do/od/przez preposition pairs.

How to study it

The deck runs in blocks: 1-15 cases and genders, 16-30 verbs, 31-41 pronouns and syntax, 42-60 nouns, adjectives and numerals, 61-81 case endings and participles, 82-95 prepositions. Don't study it front to back:

  • Pair card 7 with cards 82-89. The locative only exists after prepositions, so learn w domu / na stole (static, locative) side by side with na pocztę (motion, accusative). The static-vs-motion contrast is the whole point of those cards.
  • Turn the numeral cards (52-60) into a decision card: 1 → adjective, 2-4 → nominative plural + plural verb (4 koty stały), 5+ and masculine-personal → genitive plural + neuter singular (5 kotów stało, 5 mężczyzn stało). Then add your own drills like "3 + kobieta → ?" — the deck is an index of rules with almost no exercises, so you need to write a dozen practice cards yourself.

Three cards to tidy up

  • Card 34: "tam- prefix for 'that'" — the actual word is tamten / tamta / tamto.
  • Card 79: śpiewano is the impersonal -no/-to form, not a "past participle"; relabel it to avoid confusion with card 78.
  • Card 85: wchodzę w drzwi is an odd example; idę w góry ("I'm heading into the mountains") shows w + accusative motion more clearly.
