What the deck actually covers
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| Basic letters (jamo) in modern Hangul | 24: 14 consonants and 10 vowels |
| Hangul consonant: ㅇ (initial) | Silent/zero consonant (ng when final) |
| Hangul vowel: ㅓ | eo sound (like 'u' in 'cup') |
| Doubled consonant: ㄲ | Tense/hard k sound (ssanggiyeok) |
| Combined vowel: ㅢ | ui sound |
| 'batchim' (받침) | The final consonant in a syllable block ('pedestal') |
| Possible syllables in Hangul | 11,172 (only ~2,000 commonly used) |
| Write: 학교 (hakgyo) | School (ㅎ+ㅏ+ㄱ, ㄱ+ㅛ) |
| What prefix does North Korea use for doubled consonants | toen (된; 'hard') |
Everything you'll drill: jaeum (자음, consonants) and moeum (모음, vowels); ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ; ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ; ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ; ㅐ ㅒ ㅔ ㅖ ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ ㅢ; choseong, jungseong, jongseong; final clusters ㄳ ㄵ ㄺ ㄻ ㅄ; letter names giyeok, nieun, digeut, bieup, siot; ssang (쌍) vs toen (된); 사랑, 학교, 친구, 음식; ㅋㅋ (laughter) and ㅠㅠ (crying).
Learn consonants as triads, not as a list
The deck files plain, aspirated and doubled consonants in three separate blocks. Rebuild them as rows instead — that is how Korean ears hear them:
- ㄱ (g/k) → ㅋ (k, puff of air) → ㄲ (kk, tense, no air)
- ㄷ → ㅌ → ㄸ
- ㅂ → ㅍ → ㅃ
- ㅈ → ㅊ → ㅉ
- ㅅ → ㅆ (no aspirated partner)
Notice the shapes: one extra stroke adds aspiration, doubling the letter adds tension. Learn 4 rows and you've learned 14 letters.
Three gaps worth patching
- Batchim only have 7 sounds. Whatever the letter, a final consonant is pronounced ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ or ㅇ. ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ, ㅆ all collapse to [t] (옷 = [ot]). Add one card for this rule — it explains half of your early reading mistakes.
- Clusters are mostly silent half-letters. The cards romanize ㄳ as "gs" and ㄵ as "nj", but only one consonant is pronounced before a pause: 넋 = [넉], 앉다 = [안따]. The deck also lists only 5 of the 11 clusters; add ㄶ ㄼ ㄽ ㄾ ㄿ ㅀ.
- Flip the "Write the syllable" cards. "Write the syllable: 가 → ga" shows you the answer on the front, so it trains reading, not writing. Make a reverse card: ga → write 가.
Two pronunciation notes the deck skips: for most speakers ㅐ and ㅔ now sound the same, as do ㅙ, ㅞ and ㅚ (spelling is memorized per word). And 학교 is said [학꾜]: a ㄱ batchim tenses the next plain consonant.
