Arabic is the official language of more than 20 countries, but the Arabic you read on signs and the Arabic a taxi driver speaks are not quite the same. The Flip It deck Arabic Travel Phrases (deck code CZ4867, 209 cards) gives every English prompt an Arabic-script answer plus a transliteration, so you can learn to say a phrase and recognize it in writing at the same time.

What the 209 cards cover

Greetings and courtesy (shukran jazīlan, ʿafwan, tasharrafnā, ahlan wa sahlan, mabrūk), survival questions (ayna…?, hal tatakallam al-inglīziyyah?, kayfa aṣil ilā…?), food (khubz, dajāj, aruzz, qahwah, shāy), transport (maṭār, maḥaṭṭat al-qiṭār, tadhkirah, jawāz as-safar, taʾshīrah), money (ṣarrāf ālī, biṭāqat iʾtimān), emergencies (an-najdah!, mustashfā, ṣaydaliyyah, shurṭah), directions (yamīn, yasār, shamāl, janūb), days al-aḥad to as-sabt, numbers ṣifr to alf, places (sūq, masjid, matḥaf, ṣaḥrāʾ), and 30 adjective pairs (rakhīṣ/ghālī, mamnūʿ/masmūḥ, maftūḥ/mughlaq).

Two things to fix while you study

Tag each card MSA or street. Most cards are Modern Standard Arabic (ḥāfilah, aḥtāj, urīd), but a few are colloquial: باص (bāṣ), تاكسي, على طول, وسخ (wasikh), طيب. Tag them "spoken" so you know which ones a driver in Amman or Cairo will use and which ones you will read on a sign. If you are heading to one specific country, our Arabic dialects study guide shows how Gulf, Egyptian, Levantine and Moroccan forms differ.

Add the feminine endings. Every "I am…" card is masculine: āsif, marīḍ, jāʾiʿ, ʿaṭshān, mutʿab, ḍāʾiʿ, sāʾiḥ. A woman says āsifa, marīḍa, jāʾiʿa, ʿaṭshāna, mutʿaba, ḍāʾiʿa, sāʾiḥa. Add the -a form to the hint of each card, plus kayfa ḥāluki when speaking to a woman.

Smaller fixes: card 103 has a broken transliteration ("mughلق"), so rewrite it as mughlaq. Cards 6 and 9 share the same answer, عفوا, which means both "you're welcome" and "excuse me", so learn them together. Card 176, hal lī?, is not natural; travelers say mumkin? ("possible?").

A 3-day plan

Day 1: cards 1-29 and 155-162, out loud, including the questions you will ask most. Day 2: nouns 30-79, organized by situation (restaurant, station, pharmacy). Day 3: numbers, days and the adjective pairs. Train with Arabic on the front too, so you can read signs like مخرج (exit) and ممنوع (forbidden).
