Most nutrition exam questions come down to three things: which nutrient does what, which deficiency causes which disease, and the numbers (4, 4, 9). The Flip It deck Nutrition: Macro & Micronutrients (deck code KL1503, 78 cards) covers all three, then adds a vocabulary block on diet quality and gut health that most introductory decks skip.

What's inside

Carbohydrates (glucose, simple sugars, starch, dietary fiber), proteins (essential amino acids, complete vs incomplete), lipids (triglycerides, saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and trans fats, omega-3, omega-6, cholesterol), vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, K and folate, major vs trace minerals (calcium, iron, potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, selenium), anemia, malnutrition, undernutrition, overnutrition, antioxidants and free radicals, glycemic index, BMI, obesity, metabolic syndrome, RDA, empty calories, nutrient density, phytonutrients, probiotics, hydration, dehydration and electrolytes.

How to study it

Turn the vitamin and mineral cards into a grid. The deck spreads nutrients over 25 separate "important for" cards. Build one table with three columns — nutrient, function, deficiency — and fill the deficiency column yourself where the deck stops (vitamin D → rickets/osteomalacia, B12 → pernicious anemia, folate → neural tube defects). Three named diseases in the deck become eight.

Drill the look-alike pairs side by side. Probiotics/prebiotics, hunger/appetite, saturated/unsaturated, simple/complex carbohydrates, undernutrition/overnutrition: shuffle each pair together so you learn the contrast, not two isolated definitions.

Corrections worth making

  • Card 25 says trans fats are "artificial" and "being phased out." Small amounts occur naturally in dairy and beef; industrial partially hydrogenated oils have been banned in the US since 2018 and in the EU since 2021.
  • Card 64 calls BMI "a measure of body fat." It is weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared, used as a proxy for body fat. A muscular athlete can score "obese."
  • Card 17 ties complete proteins to animal sources; soy, quinoa and buckwheat are complete too.
  • Card 75's "2–3 liters" is total water intake, food included (EFSA: about 2.0 L for women, 2.5 L for men).
  • The calorie cards stop at 4/4/9: add alcohol at 7 kcal per gram. Card 4 repeats card 2, so suspend one.

Which nutrition deck first?

This deck overlaps the Macronutrients and Micronutrients deck (JX5835) on about 22 fronts. JX5835 goes deeper on numbers (the nine amino acids by name, DRIs); KL1503 adds deficiency diseases, gut health and diet-quality terms. Learn them in that order. For the hospital side, see clinical nutrition.
