This deck ships as Turkish Travel & Food Vocabulary (deck code MJ6820, 146 cards), but read the cards and one half of that title disappears: there is no airport, no hotel, no ticket, no bus, no left or right. Roughly 130 cards are food, and the last fourteen are restaurant survival words. So stop treating it as a travel deck and use it for what it actually is — a menu decoder, and a dense one. Cards run English → Turkish, which trains production: you see clotted cream, you produce kaymak.

What you actually walk away with

The kebap family (döner kebap, Adana kebap, şiş kebap, tavuk şiş, İskender kebap, cağ kebabı), the meze table (piyaz, humus, çerkez tavuğu, patlıcan salatası, şakşuka), dough (börek, pide, lahmacun, gözleme, mantı), the whole dessert trolley (baklava, künefe, kadayıf, helva, lokum, sütlaç, muhallebi, revani, aşure, güllaç, kabak tatlısı, ayva tatlısı), fish by species (hamsi, sardalya, levrek, barbunya, lüfer, kılıç balığı, palamut), offal (ciğer, kokoreç, işkembe), drinks (çay, ayran, Türk kahvesi, rakı, salep, boza, pekmez), herbs and spices (maydanoz, dereotu, nane, kekik, karabiber, kimyon, tarçın, sumak, tahin), nuts (antep fıstığı, ceviz, fındık, badem, kestane) and fruit (nar, incir, kayısı, karpuz, kavun, erik, üzüm).

Tip 1: turn the fifteen freebie cards into spelling drills

Bulgur → Bulgur. Baklava → Baklava. Mantı → Mantı. Lahmacun → Lahmacun. Künefe, Boza, Rakı, Aşure, Güllaç, Humus/Humus — about fifteen cards have the same word on both sides, so in review you will tap good without learning anything. Recycle them: answer by typing the Turkish, and you are suddenly drilling the alphabet that actually trips learners up — dotless ı (Mantı, Kadayıf), ğ (Tereyağı, Yoğurt), ş (Şakşuka), ç (Çorba, Çılbır).

Tip 2: extract the compound rule the deck never states

Four cards quietly show the same grammar: kebap becomes cağ kebabı, balık becomes kılıç balığı, kabak becomes kabak tatlısı, kahve becomes Türk kahvesi. That is the possessive suffix -(s)I on the second noun of a compound, plus final p → b and k → ğ softening. Write that single card yourself and half the menu becomes predictable instead of memorised.

Three ambiguities to annotate

  • Kabak is zucchini on card 39 and pumpkin inside kabak tatlısı on card 103. Both are right; note it.
  • Barbunya is red mullet here, but on a meze list it is usually the bean (barbunya fasulyesi).
  • Kokoreç is the grilled street dish, not the organ — intestine as a body part is bağırsak.

Add five sentence cards before your trip (Hesap, lütfen · Bir çay, lütfen · Ne kadar? · ...istiyorum · Etsiz olabilir mi?), because the deck gives you 130 nouns and not one verb.
