Open any Greek subtitle file, news article or WhatsApp thread and you will see the same tiny words over and over: να, το, δεν, είναι, θα, και. They carry almost no meaning on their own, yet without them you cannot understand a single sentence. That is exactly why the Greek Vocabulary: Top 100 Essential Words deck (code LH7633, 98 cards) is the first thing to learn before any themed vocabulary.

This guide shows you what is in the deck, how to group the cards so they stick, and two habits that make Greek function words click much faster.
The cards, in order of frequency
The deck is sorted by real-world frequency, so the first cards are the ones you will meet most. A sample:
| English | Greek |
|---|---|
| to/that (particle) | να |
| not | δεν |
| is/are | είναι |
| will (future) | θα |
| that/which | που |
| yes / no | ναι / όχι |
| okay/alright | εντάξει |
| I want | θέλω |
| there is/are | υπάρχει |
| let's go | πάμε |
Every card has an English prompt on the front and the Greek word on the back, so you practise producing the word, not just recognising it.
Four families hidden in the list
Instead of drilling 98 unrelated cards, sort them mentally into families. The deck naturally splits into:
1. The definite article in all its forms. Greek has three genders and four cases, and the deck covers the forms you actually hear: ο, η, το, τον, την, τη, του, της, τα, οι, τις, τους, των, plus the contracted "in the" forms στο, στον, στην, στη, στα. That is 18 cards, all variations of one idea: the.
2. Verb particles and connectors. να, θα, δεν, δε, μην, και, κι, αλλά, ή, αν, ότι, πως, που, όταν, γιατί, λοιπόν, έτσι, σαν. Master these and Greek word order stops feeling random.
3. The three verbs you cannot avoid. The deck gives you full conjugation fragments of to be (είμαι, είσαι, είναι, ήταν), to have (έχω, έχεις, έχει, έχουμε), to do (κάνω, κάνεις, κάνει), to be able (μπορώ, μπορείς, μπορεί), and to know (ξέρω, ξέρεις). Plus the modal πρέπει (must), θέλω (I want) and υπάρχει (there is).
4. Pronouns and adverbs of daily speech. εγώ, εσύ, μου, σου, του, μας, σας, αυτό, αυτή, αυτός, αυτά, τώρα, εδώ, εκεί, μέσα, μαζί, μόνο, πολύ, πιο, ακόμα, ποτέ, τίποτα, κάτι, όλα, ίσως, τότε, απλά, καλά.
Only four cards are true "content" words: σπίτι (house/home), ευχαριστώ (thank you), παρακαλώ (please) and έλα (come). That tells you what this deck is really about: the skeleton of the language.
Study plan by family, not by number
- Session 1 – articles. Review the 18 article cards in a single run. Say the noun-less phrase out loud with a gesture: point for ο/η/το, motion "into" for στο/στην/στον.
- Session 2 – particles. Build one sentence per particle using words you already know: Θέλω να πάμε (I want us to go), Δεν ξέρω (I don't know), Θα έχω (I will have).
- Session 3 – verbs. Chant each mini-conjugation as a rhythm: είμαι-είσαι-είναι, έχω-έχεις-έχει.
- Session 4 onward – mixed daily review. Let Flip It's spaced repetition serve the cards you keep missing. With 98 cards, ten minutes a day is enough; expect most cards to be stable within two weeks.
Two tips that only work for Greek
Learn δεν and μην as a pair, never alone. Both mean "not", but δεν negates statements (δεν ξέρω – I don't know) while μην negates commands and να-clauses (μην κάνεις – don't do). The deck lists both; review them back to back so the contrast becomes automatic.
Treat στο / στον / στην / στη / στα as one card in your head. They are simply σε + article. When the article card appears, silently add "σε +" and produce the contracted form. You learn the contractions for free instead of as five separate items.
