Thai Idioms and Proverbs: Memorize the Real Sayings in a 78-Card Deck
Study the 78-card Thai Idioms & Proverbs deck: which sayings are genuinely Thai, which are English calques, and the cards to fix before you review.
Most Thai vocabulary lists teach you elephant and temple before they teach you how to say ไม่เป็นไร (it's okay) — the phrase you will actually hear ten times a day. The Thai Vocabulary: 1000 Words deck (code AG9143, 701 cards) takes the opposite approach: it is a frequency list built from spoken, everyday Thai, so the first cards are ฉัน (I), ใช่ (yes), ไม่ (no), ขอบคุณ (thank you) and ทำไม (why). Here is how to work through it efficiently.

What the deck looks like
Every card goes English → Thai script, without transliteration. That is deliberate: reading Thai from day one is slower at first but pays off fast, because romanisation systems are inconsistent and you will need the script for menus and signs anyway. A sample of the cards:
| Front (English) | Back (Thai) |
|---|---|
| thank you | ขอบคุณ |
| it's okay | ไม่เป็นไร |
| hello (male) | สวัสดีครับ |
| hello (female) | สวัสดีค่ะ |
| I (male, formal) | ผม |
| what happened | เกิดอะไรขึ้น |
| where are you going? | คุณจะไปไหน |
| I have to go (male) | ผมต้องไปแล้ว |
| tomorrow | พรุ่งนี้ |
| money | เงิน |
Beyond single words, the deck covers the phrases spoken Thai is made of: สวัสดี (hello), แล้วเจอกัน (see you later), ฉันขอโทษ (I'm sorry), ฉันรู้ (I know), ผมไม่เข้าใจ (I don't understand), เดี๋ยวก่อน (wait a minute), มานี่ (come here), อย่าขยับ (don't move), ไม่เอาน่า (come on), บ้าจริง (crazy), ความจริง (truth), หัวหน้า (boss), ตำรวจ (police), เพื่อน (friend), ที่รัก (darling), แม่ / พ่อ (mother / father), พี่ชาย (older brother), ลูก (child), the numbers หนึ่ง / สอง / สาม, time words วันนี้ / พรุ่งนี้ / ตอนนี้ / ปี (today / tomorrow / now / year), question words อะไร / ทำไม / ที่ไหน (what / why / where) and connectors และ / แต่ / ดังนั้น / งั้น (and / but / so / then).
The gender particles are the real lesson
Roughly a fifth of the deck comes in male and female pairs: ขอบคุณครับ / ขอบคุณค่ะ, ใช่ครับ / ใช่ค่ะ, ได้ครับ / ได้ค่ะ, ขอโทษครับ / ขอโทษค่ะ. The rule is simple once you see the pattern:
- ครับ (khrap) ends a polite sentence if the speaker is male; ค่ะ (kha) if the speaker is female. The question form for women is คะ with a rising tone.
- The pronoun follows the same split: men say ผม for I, women say ฉัน (also used informally by everyone).
- ครับ on its own also means yes or sir, and ค่ะ ma'am — the deck has these as separate cards.
Tip: when you review, only study the particle that matches you. Mark the other gender's cards as known so your reviews are not doubled — the deck's card pairs exist so both learners are served, not so that one learner memorises both.
Second tip: the deck tags register with notes like (polite), (male) or (agreement). Two cards translate okay: โอเค (borrowed, casual) and ตกลง (agreement, "deal"). Learn them as different words rather than as synonyms, and do the same for นาย (you, polite) versus เธอ (you, familiar).
A pace that fits 701 cards
- Cards 1–100 are almost entirely function words and interjections (โอเค, โอ้, เฮ้, ว้าว, เอาล่ะ). Push through them in a week; they are short and you will recognise them instantly in Thai dramas.
- Cards 100–400 introduce the gendered phrase pairs. Twenty new cards a day is realistic here because most are recombinations of words you already have (ผม + รู้ = I know, ผม + สัญญา = I promise).
- Cards 400–701 add nouns and full questions (เขาอยู่ไหน – where is he?). At 15 a day you finish in under a month total.
Reading each Thai answer aloud before flipping is the single most useful habit: the script encodes the tone, and saying ทำไม (why) with the right pitch is what makes it recognisable to a Thai ear.
