What the 148 cards cover

Fish and game dominate: lohi, silakka, hauki, ahven, muikku, siika, kuha, mäti, rapu, savulohi, graavilohi, lohikeitto — then poro, hirvi, peura, karhu, jänis, teeri. Breads and grains: ruis, ohra, kaura, vehnä, rieska, maitorieska, näkkileipä, pettuleipä. Forest food: sieni, kantarelli, herkkutatti, korvasieni, and the full berry set — mustikka, puolukka, lakka, karpalo, vadelma, mansikka, metsämansikka, mesimarja, tyrni. Dishes and bakes: karjalanpaisti, kalakukko, lihapiirakka, kaalikääryleet, kaalilaatikko, lihapullat, mustamakkara, hernekeitto, pannukakku, vispipuuro, mämmi, pasha, joulutorttu, laskiaispulla, runebergintorttu, tippaleipä, munkki. Drinks: kahvi, piimä, viili, olut, sahti, sima, glögi, lonkero, lakkalikööri. Plus meals (aamupala, lounas, päivällinen, iltapala, välipala), table items (lautanen, kuppi, lasi, haarukka, veitsi, lusikka) and seasonings (suola, sokeri, pippuri, tilli, ruohosipuli, sipuli, valkosipuli, kaneli, kardemumma).

Use it as a compound-word trainer

Almost half the deck is compounds, and Finnish builds them head-final: the last element is the thing, everything before it describes it. Ruis+leipä = rye bread. Savu+lohi = smoke salmon. Musta+makkara = black sausage. Kerma+vaahto = cream foam. Once you see the pattern you can decode restaurant menus you have never studied.

Watch the linking element, because some compounds put the first noun in the genitive: sianliha (pig's meat), naudanliha (cattle's meat), poronkäristys, karjalanpaisti, metsämansikka. Sort the compound cards into "plain stem" and "genitive stem" piles and the spelling stops being guesswork.

The one grammar fix this deck needs

Every back is a nominative singular, which is not the form you will ever use at a table. Finnish food words take the partitive when you order, eat or drink part of something: vesi becomes vettä, kahvi becomes kahvia, leipä becomes leipää, maito becomes maitoa. "Saisinko vettä" — may I have some water — never uses vesi. Add the partitive to the hint field of your first twenty cards and you will actually be able to speak from this deck. Our 1000 Finnish words by frequency guide walks through how the partitive and genitive are formed.

Four cards to correct

Piimä appears twice, once as "buttermilk" and once as "sour milk" — identical back, so delete one or your progress stats are inflated. Vodka → viina is loose: viina means spirits or booze generally, vodka is vodka. Mead → sima needs a footnote: sima is the lightly fermented lemon-and-honey drink Finns make for Vappu (May Day), not English mead. And almond paste → mantelihillo reads as "almond jam"; Finnish baking recipes say mantelimassa.

Bonus distinction the deck leaves implicit: poro is domesticated reindeer, peura is wild deer or wild reindeer, hirvi is moose. Three separate animals, three separate menu items.
