Italian looks friendly to English speakers: thousands of words share Latin roots. That's exactly why false friends hurt. You say Sono molto eccitato or ask for a preservativo in a jam shop, and the room goes quiet. Deck RI4237 – Italian False Friends (95 cards) drills the pairs that cause those moments. Here's how to learn it efficiently, and which cards to treat with care.

The cards that matter most
| Italian (front) | Real meaning (back) |
|---|---|
| camera | room (camera = macchina fotografica) |
| libreria | bookstore (library = biblioteca) |
| parenti | relatives (parents = genitori) |
| attualmente | currently (actually = in realtà) |
| eventualmente | possibly (eventually = alla fine) |
| morbido | soft (morbid = macabro) |
| conveniente | cheap, affordable (convenient = comodo) |
| pretendere | to demand, to claim (to pretend = fingere) |
| estate | summer (estate = proprietà) |
| patente | driver's license (patent = brevetto) |
Each card gives you two words: the trap and the correct Italian for the English meaning. Learn both directions.
What the deck covers
Confetti (sugared almonds, paper ones are coriandoli), incidente, annoiare/annoiato, argomento, educato/educazione, sensibile, rumore, largo, firma, fastidioso, triviale, suggestivo, confrontare, delusione, fabbrica vs fattoria, comprensivo, lunatico, pavimento, parola, grosso, cantina, magazzino, consistere, romanzo, affetto, agenda, anticipare, attendere, bravo, casuale, cognato, collegio, conferenza, disgrazia, dispetto, domandare, gentile, giornale, guardare, ignorare, ingegnoso.
Study tip 1: sort the deck into three piles
The deck mixes three different kinds of card, and they deserve different treatment:
- True traps (cards 1-53, most of them): the core. Study these first, in small batches.
- Partial overlaps: batteria (drums and battery), ciabatta (slipper and bread), corrente, emozione, confusione. Learn the extra meaning, not a "NOT".
- Safe cognates: about 19 cards marked "same meaning" (decente, delicato, formale, importante, intelligente, invitare, irreale…). Tag them safe and review them rarely; they reassure you that most cognates do work.
A few cards are worth editing in your copy: factory (card 6) and audience (card 48) aren't Italian words (the court hearing is udienza); cadere/cadge, concorrenza/occurrence, conduttore/behavior and mancia/mania compare words nobody confuses. And campagna does also mean campaign (campagna pubblicitaria), so rewrite that back as "countryside and campaign".
Study tip 2: learn word families together
Several traps come in pairs: eventualmente/eventuale, annoiare/annoiato, educato/educazione, incidente/accidente. Review each pair back-to-back so one memory covers both. Then make a sentence that forces the contrast: In libreria ho comprato un romanzo, non in biblioteca.
