Passing HSK 3 gets you through daily conversation. HSK 4 is where Mandarin starts sounding like an actual language you can debate, argue, and explain yourself in — abstract nouns, connectors, and verbs for opinions rather than just objects. This deck covers the 364-word HSK 4 list card by card, each with pinyin built in.

What changes at HSK 4
The jump from HSK 3 to HSK 4 isn't more of the same — it's a different kind of vocabulary. Instead of "cup" and "chair," you get words like 表演 (biǎoyǎn, "performance"), 辩论 (biànlùn, "to argue"), and 策略 (cèlüè, "policy/strategy"). These are the words that let you describe opinions, plans, and abstract situations instead of just naming things around you. If HSK 3 was survival Chinese, HSK 4 is functional Chinese.
Sample vocabulary from the deck
| English | Chinese (Pinyin) |
|---|---|
| to arrange | 安排 (ānpái) |
| to argue | 辩论 (biànlùn) |
| performance | 表演 (biǎoyǎn) |
| policy / strategy | 策略 (cèlüè) |
| to distinguish | 辨认 (biànrèn) |
| appearance | 表面 (biǎomiàn) |
| wealth | 财产 (cáichǎn) |
| disabled | 残疾 (cánjí) |
| operation | 操作 (cāozuò) |
| ashamed | 惭愧 (cánkuì) |
The range this deck covers
Across 364 cards, expect concrete nouns you haven't hit yet (脖子 bózi "neck", 玻璃 bōli "glass", 叉子 chāzi "fork"), abstract concepts (材料 cáiliào "material", 部队 bùduì "troops"), and connector/function words that start showing up in real sentences (并且 bìngqiě "and", 曾经 céngjīng "once/formerly", 别 bié "don't"). This mix is exactly what the HSK 4 exam tests — not just recognition, but the ability to slot these words into sentences correctly.
A study approach that fits this level
Rote repetition works for HSK 1-2's concrete nouns, but HSK 4 vocabulary rewards a different method:
- Build mini-sentences as you review. Don't just memorize 策略 as "strategy" — say "我们需要一个新策略" (we need a new strategy) out loud. Abstract words stick when you use them in context, not in isolation.
- Cluster by part of speech. Group the verbs (辩论, 猜 cāi "to guess", 藏 cáng "to hide") separately from the nouns and connectors. HSK 4 grammar patterns depend heavily on knowing which words are verbs.
- Re-test in random order weekly. Once a card feels easy in sequence, shuffle the deck — real exams and real conversations never present vocabulary in the order you studied it.
Why this matters beyond the exam
HSK 4 vocabulary is the tipping point where you can start watching Chinese variety shows or reading short articles without pausing every sentence. Words like 表演, 操作, and 材料 appear constantly in everyday media — mastering this list pays off far beyond exam day.
