Deck CD2303 — Football/Soccer: Rules, Players & World Cup (96 cards) is a solid cut of the association football reference literature: the etymology, the ancient ancestors, the 1863 codification, women's football, then the Laws of the Game in detail. Two of the three subjects in its title barely show up — plan around that and it becomes a genuinely good history-and-rules deck.

The five blocks
What football is (1-20) · ancient and medieval ancestors (21-28) · codification and governance, 1848-1913 (29-45) · competitions and women's football (46-57) · gameplay and the Laws (58-96).
You will memorise: the IFAB (1886, Manchester); the Football Association, 26 October 1863, Freemasons' Tavern; Ebenezer Cobb Morley; the thirteen original laws ratified by eleven clubs; hacking and the Blackheath withdrawal; the Rugby Football Union (1871); the FA Cup (1872, Charles W. Alcock); Scotland-England in Glasgow, 1872; the first league, Birmingham 1888, William McGregor; FIFA (Paris, 1904) and the confederations AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, UEFA; the World Cup (1930); the Women's World Cup (China, 1991); the British Ladies' Football Club (Nettie Honeyball, 1894); the 1921 FA ban rescinded in 1971; Brazil's ban, 1941-1979; cuju and the Zhan Guo Ce; episkyros, phaininda, harpastum, la soule, calcio storico fiorentino; the Cambridge rules of 1848; pitch and ball dimensions; the eight restart methods; VAR and goal line technology.

Three cards to repair before you trust them
Card 91, the away goals rule. Given as current law. UEFA abolished it across its club competitions from 2021-22, and CONMEBOL dropped it too. Rewrite the chain: level on aggregate → extra time → penalty shoot-out.
Card 59, offside. The back says players may not pass to a teammate in an offside position. Wrong twice over: standing in an offside position is not an offence until you are involved in active play, and there is no offside from a throw-in, goal kick or corner. Worse, offside position is never defined in the 96 cards — write it yourself: nearer the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent, in the opponents' half.
Card 96, the captain. Since the 2024/25 Laws and the Euro 2024 protocol, the captain is the only player permitted to approach the referee for an explanation, so only official responsibility no longer holds.
Two more to date-stamp rather than fix: card 63 (2.85 goals per match) is specifically 2022-23 Premier League, and card 5 (250 million players) is a FIFA estimate from the 2000s.
What the title promises and the deck does not deliver
Players: a single card (64) covers the whole subject — strikers, defenders, midfielders. No full-back, winger, centre-back, holding midfielder or sweeper, and not one player named in 96 cards. World Cup: five cards, none of which gives a winner, a host or the tournament format.
Tip: card 92 lists direct and indirect free kicks among the restarts, but nothing anywhere explains the difference, and no card defines a foul, a yellow card or a red card. Those four cards are the highest-value thing you can add — they are what the rest of the rulebook hangs on.
Tip: the deck cuts its source twice, so early cards return later carrying the precision — 2 and 68 (eleven players → one must be the goalkeeper), 4 and 84 (two 45-minute halves → the clock runs continuously), 9 and 58 (handling), 6 and 67 (who maintains the Laws). Review each pair together, then suspend the shorter card.
