Textbook Mandarin gets you through a taxi ride, but it won't get you through a board meeting. Business Chinese uses its own register: contracts, subsidiaries, quarterly losses, seminars — words that rarely show up in general HSK study lists but appear constantly in emails, negotiations, and office small talk. This 288-card deck fills that specific gap for anyone working with Mandarin-speaking colleagues, clients, or suppliers.

What's inside the deck

A sample of the vocabulary you'll drill, English front to Chinese back with pinyin:

EnglishChinese
company公司 (gōngsī)
subsidiary子公司 (zǐ gōngsī)
advertisement广告 (guǎnggào)
disadvantage劣势 (lièshì)
receipt收据 (shōujù)
seminar研讨会 (yántǎohuì)
collaboration协作 (xiézuò)
distribution分销 (fēnxiāo)
assembly组装 (zǔzhuāng)
obligation义务 (yìwù)

The full 288-card set covers corporate structure (company, subsidiary, manager, employee), finance (profit, loss, receipt), legal and formal terms (contract, obligation, disadvantage), operations (assembly, distribution, interface), and meeting vocabulary (seminar, collaboration, advertisement) — essentially the working vocabulary of an office environment, not a classroom.

Why this deck is different from general HSK study

Business Chinese words tend to be compound terms built from characters you may already know individually, just combined in ways general courses skip. 子公司 (zǐ gōngsī, "subsidiary") is literally "child company" — 子 (child) + 公司 (company). Once you notice this pattern, dozens of business terms stop being new vocabulary and start being recombinations of characters you've already learned, which cuts memorization time significantly.

A second pattern worth tracking: many business terms are two-character compounds where each half also works as a standalone word elsewhere in Mandarin (协作 xiézuò "collaboration" splits into 协 "coordinate" + 作 "work/do"). Reviewing the deck with attention to these splits builds intuition for guessing unfamiliar compound terms later, which is a real skill in professional Mandarin.

Study approach

  • First pass: Group cards by theme as you review — finance words together, legal words together, meeting vocabulary together. The deck order isn't thematic, so do this mentally or on paper as you go.
  • Second pass: Focus on the compound words specifically (subsidiary, distribution, collaboration) and try to identify the individual characters inside each — this is the fastest route to long-term retention for this deck.
  • Ongoing: Since you likely already know general vocabulary, prioritize repetition on the terms you'd realistically use in a real meeting or email over the ones you wouldn't.

This deck assumes intermediate Mandarin — if some grammar or basic vocabulary still feels shaky, the HSK 5 Vocabulary deck and HSK 6 Vocabulary deck build the advanced foundation this vocabulary sits on top of. For everyday spoken fluency outside the office, pair it with the Practical Chinese phrasebook deck.
