Deck MO6842 — Renewable Energy holds 83 cards that follow one long encyclopedic article source by source: the big picture and grid problems (cards 1-16), solar (17-26), wind (27-28), hydro (29-36), bioenergy (37-50), geothermal (51-59), emerging technologies (60-68), then a glossary tail (69-83). Knowing that structure is the key to studying it well.

Notions you'll master

Variable renewable energy, intermittency, capacity factor, dispatchable generation, demand response, smart grid, sector coupling, vehicle-to-grid, distributed generation, overcapacity, curtailment, green hydrogen, pumped storage, sand battery; photovoltaics, passive solar, concentrated solar power, floatovoltaics, agrivoltaics; offshore wind; run-of-the-river, small hydro, Three Gorges, Itaipu; bioethanol, biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol, algal fuel, biojet; enhanced geothermal systems, geothermal heat pumps (under 30°C) vs power plants (150°C+); marine energy, reverse electrodialysis, space-based solar power, artificial photosynthesis, breeder reactors, and the renewable vs low-carbon vs sustainable distinction.

Tip 1: suspend the glossary tail's repeats

Cards 69-83 re-teach earlier material: energy storage (79) repeats card 11, learning curve (83) is Swanson's law from card 23, and pumped storage appears at both 12 and 36. Keep the earlier, number-rich versions and suspend the rest. Rewrite card 78 while you are there: it says a solar thermal collector concentrates sunlight with mirrors or lenses, but that describes CSP (card 24). Most rooftop collectors, flat-plate and evacuated-tube, concentrate nothing.

Tip 2: patch the wind gap and date your numbers

Wind, one of the "big three" sources in card 2, gets just two cards. Add four yourself: how a turbine converts wind to electricity, the Betz limit (59.3%), typical onshore vs offshore capacity factors, and the fact that power scales with the cube of wind speed. Then tag every dated figure: wood as top biomass source is "as of 2012", PV growth is 2021 data, and Golmud is no longer the record holder: China's Midong plant in Xinjiang (3.5 GW, 2024) now claims the title. A quick check of current rankings keeps your answers exam-safe.
