Who wrote Musashi? Who created Detective Conan? How many books did Agatha Christie actually publish? Pub quizzes, literature exams and casual arguments all run on the same reflex: hear a title, produce a name. The Famous Authors & Their Works deck on Flip It (deck code XI4212, 141 cards) trains exactly that reflex, and it is far broader than the usual Western canon.

Three kinds of cards

The deck mixes three formats, which is what makes it stick:

  1. Title → author (the bulk): Romeo and Juliet → William Shakespeare, Dream of the Red Chamber → Cao Xueqin, Eugene Onegin → Alexander Pushkin, Steppenwolf and Siddhartha → Hermann Hesse.
  2. Author → what they are known for: Georges Simenon → Belgian detective novels featuring Maigret; Jin Yong → Chinese wuxia novels; Astrid Lindgren → Pippi Longstocking; Corín Tellado → over 4,000 Spanish romance novels.
  3. Author → output count: Agatha Christie → 86 books, James Patterson → 400+ books, Eiichiro Oda → 113 volumes, Dan Brown → 7 books.

Names you'll master: Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Carroll, Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, Beatrix Potter, Dr. Seuss, Enid Blyton, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, R. L. Stine, Michael Crichton, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, Ian Fleming, Dan Brown, John Grisham, Ken Follett, Jeffrey Archer, Wilbur Smith, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, Nicholas Sparks, Stephenie Meyer, E.L. Tips for this specific deck

Group by detective. A large slice of the deck is series detectives, and the character name is the hook: Poirot/Marple → Christie, Maigret → Simenon, Perry Mason → Erle Stanley Gardner, Nero Wolfe → Rex Stout, Mike Hammer → Spillane, Alex Cross → Patterson, Jack Ryan → Clancy, Jason Bourne → Ludlum, Robert Langdon → Dan Brown, Dirk Pitt → Cussler, Kay Scarpetta → Cornwell, San Antonio → Frédéric Dard. Learn the twelve as one list; the deck then feels half its size.

Treat the count cards as a separate mini-deck. Numbers like 42 works (Shakespeare), 22 books (Rowling), 72 volumes (Kishimoto) or 300+ (Richard Scarry, the Berenstains) do not attach to a story, so they need pure repetition. Do them last, in short bursts, after the title-author pairs are solid.

Watch for repeat authors. Toriyama appears for both Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump; Takahashi for Urusei Yatsura/Ranma ½ and Inuyasha; Stine for Goosebumps and Fear Street; Archer for Kane and Abel and The Clifton Chronicles. When one shows up, recall the other before flipping.

Study plan

Two passes of the full deck to sort known from unknown, then daily 10-minute reviews of the misses. Most learners finish the detective cluster in a day and the manga cluster in another; the output counts take a week of light review.
