Most people fail the written driving test on signs, not on rules: everyone knows the stop sign, far fewer know that a circular yellow sign means a railroad crossing ahead or that an advisory speed is not enforceable. Deck QU4358 — US Driving Test: Signs & Rules on Flip It turns the whole MUTCD sign system plus the core right-of-way and lane-marking rules into 150 flashcards. Here is how to get through them in a few evenings.

How the deck is structured
The cards follow the numbering of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (11th edition, December 19, 2023), so learning the series codes gives you a mental filing cabinet:
- Regulatory signs (R series) — R1 STOP/YIELD, R2 speed limits (R2-1, R2-4 minimum speed), R3 lane usage and turns (no right turn, no U-turn, right turn only, HOV 2+), R4 movement (do not pass, keep right/left, slower traffic keep right), R5 exclusions (do not enter, wrong way, no trucks, no bicycles, no pedestrians), R6 one way, R7/R8 parking (no parking any time, do not stop on tracks), R10 signals (no turn on red, left turn yield on green, stop here on red), R11 road closed / bridge out, R12 weight limits, R15 crossbuck, R16 move over and no hand-held phone.
- Warning signs (W series) — W1 curves (turn, curve, reverse curve, chevron, hairpin), W2 intersections (crossroad, side road, T, Y, roundabout), W3 stop/yield/signal ahead, W4 merge, lane ends, added lane, W5 road narrows, narrow bridge, one lane bridge, W6 divided highway begins/ends, two-way traffic, W7 steep hill and truck escape ramp, W8 bump, dip, pavement ends, slippery when wet, bridge ices before road, road may flood, W10 railroad crossing, W11 pedestrian, deer and bicycle crossings, W12 low clearance, W13 advisory speed.
- School signs (S series) — fluorescent yellow-green, school zone, school bus stop ahead.
- Rules of the road — flashing red vs flashing yellow, 4-way stop priority, unmarked intersections, left turns vs oncoming traffic, pedestrians in crosswalks, when passing is prohibited, white vs yellow lines, solid vs broken, two-way left turn lanes, stopping 15–50 feet from a railroad crossing, 3–4 second following distance, hydroplaning.
Sample cards from the deck
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| What shape is a STOP sign? | Octagon (8-sided) |
| What shape are warning signs? | Diamond (except railroad crossing which is circular) |
| What does R5-1a mean? | Wrong way |
| What does W8-13 mean? | Bridge ices before road |
| Is an advisory speed legally enforceable? | No, it's a recommendation, not a legal speed limit |
| What does a flashing red light mean? | Treat it like a STOP sign — come to complete stop, then proceed when safe |
| What is the right-of-way rule at a 4-way stop? | First vehicle to arrive goes first; if simultaneous, vehicle on the right goes first |
| What does solid yellow on your side, broken on the other mean? | You cannot pass; oncoming traffic can pass |
| How far from a railroad crossing must you stop? | Between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail |
| What does 'Fines Double' mean in work zones? | Traffic fines are twice the normal amount in work zones |
Study tips for this deck
Learn shape and color before any code. Six pairings cover almost every sign on the test: red octagon = stop, red inverted triangle = yield, yellow diamond = warning, white rectangle = regulatory (red for prohibitions), fluorescent yellow-green = school/pedestrian, yellow circle = railroad ahead. When a card asks "what does W5-2 mean?", the W already tells you it is a yellow diamond about a hazard — you only need to recall which hazard.
Treat the line-marking cards as one logic table. Color answers "who is on the other side" (white = same direction, yellow = opposite), pattern answers "may I cross" (broken = yes, solid = discouraged or forbidden). Every one of the seven line cards is a combination of those two questions.
The written exam is state-specific — the deck flags this where it matters (school zone limits "usually 15–25 mph, varies by state") — so pair it with your state's handbook for local numbers.
