Europe packs 44 countries into a small space, and its flags are just as crowded: a dozen horizontal tricolours, five Nordic crosses and several pairs that differ only in shade or proportion. The Flip It deck RJ6818 "Flags: Europe" shows the real flag image on the front and the country on the back, with the capital as a hint. Learn the flags in clusters of look-alikes, not in alphabetical order.

What the deck covers

The 44 cards cover Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. The hints add the capitals in their local spelling, such as Baile Átha Cliath, Beograd, București and Warszawa.

The look-alike clusters to drill

  • Nordic crosses: Denmark (red/white), Sweden (blue/yellow), Finland (white/blue), Norway (red with a blue cross edged in white), Iceland (blue with a red cross edged in white). Norway and Iceland swap the same colours.
  • Pan-Slavic white-blue-red: Russia (plain), Slovakia (arms on the hoist side), Slovenia (arms in the upper hoist corner). Serbia uses the same colours in the order red-blue-white.
  • Blue-yellow-red verticals: Romania (plain), Andorra and Moldova (with arms). This is the hardest trio in the deck.
  • Red-white pairs: Monaco is red over white; Poland is white over red. Austria and Latvia differ in shade and stripe width.
  • Shade traps: the Netherlands vs Luxembourg (sky blue and longer proportions), Ireland vs Italy (orange vs red), Belgium (vertical) vs Germany (horizontal, same colours).

Tip 1 — make a second pass in reverse. After you can name the country from the flag, study the hints the other way: from the capital to the country. Watch for two traps. Amsterdam is the capital, but the government sits in The Hague. Bern is only the "federal city" of Switzerland.

Tip 2 — add the missing cards. This deck has no cards for the United Kingdom or Vatican City. Belarus is a good test case: its flag was redrawn in 2012 with a slightly different ornament, so check the image against the current flag. Write the two missing cards yourself so the deck covers all of Europe.
