Tip 1: merge the cards that share an answer
About a dozen people appear on two cards with the same back: FDR (3/4), Churchill (8/9), Thatcher (10/11), Gorbachev (25/26), Mao (38/40), Castro (49/54). Reviewing them in reverse (name → fact) is impossible, and the second card is almost free once you know the first. Make one card per person with every fact on the back: Thatcher – first female PM, 1979-1990, "Iron Lady".
Tip 2: fix five backs before they stick
- Card 76: Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Romans in 800. Most historians date the Holy Roman Empire itself from Otto I in 962.
- Card 77: George III was King of Great Britain (and from 1801 the United Kingdom), not of England, which stopped being a separate kingdom in 1707.
- Card 83: Nero "fiddling" is a legend. The fiddle didn't exist yet, and Tacitus puts him in Antium when the fire started.
- Card 75: The "I speak Spanish to God" line attributed to Charles V is apocryphal.
- Card 35: 1869-1948 are Gandhi's birth and death years, not years in office. Every other back gives years of rule, so write (lifespan) on this one.
Also watch the gaps: Japan has no card at all, and neither do Sun Yat-sen or Chiang Kai-shek. Card 38 names Mao as the founder of "modern China", but the Republic of China dates from 1912. Add those cards yourself.
Keep going
The dates in this deck line up with two companion articles: Major Revolutions (Robespierre, Castro, Khomeini) and Major Wars & Battles.
