Largest Islands (deck code PV5896, 50 cards) opens with a clean top 10, from Greenland down to Ellesmere Island, then switches to single-island facts: areas, owners, regional records. The fastest way to master it is to turn those scattered facts back into one ranked list.

What you'll memorize

The top 10: Greenland, New Guinea, Borneo, Madagascar, Baffin, Sumatra, Honshu, Victoria Island, Great Britain, Ellesmere. Regional records: Cuba (Caribbean), Sicily and Sardinia (Mediterranean), Madagascar (Africa and the Indian Ocean), Tierra del Fuego (South America), Luzon (Philippines), Hainan (China), Spitsbergen (Svalbard), Kodiak (Alaska), Vancouver Island. Japan's Honshu, Hokkaido and Kyushu. The Canadian Arctic: Banks, Devon, Somerset, Prince of Wales. Plus Hispaniola, Sakhalin, Sulawesi and its K shape, Java, Newfoundland, Iceland, Ireland, Tasmania, Taiwan and the Falklands.

Rebuild ranks 11 to 20

After card 11 the deck stops giving ranks, but the areas it lists are the next ten in order: Sulawesi, South Island (NZ), Java, North Island (NZ), Luzon, Newfoundland, Cuba, Iceland, Mindanao, Ireland. Write ten "What is the 11th… 20th largest island?" cards. Then the area cards stop being trivia and become a ranked list you can check yourself against. One catch: the deck's 109,884 km² for Cuba is the whole country. The main island alone is about 104,500 km², which puts it behind Newfoundland (108,860) and just ahead of Iceland (103,000).

Cards to fix before you drill

  • Duplicates: Madagascar appears three times (cards 4, 27, 45). Baffin (6/50), Great Britain (10/17), Cuba (25/37) and Greenland (1/14) appear twice each. Keep the ranked card and merge the regional record into its hint.
  • Card 26 asks "Which two countries share Borneo?" and answers three. Change the front to "Which three countries…": Indonesia (Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak) and Brunei.
  • Card 14 gives "the largest island entirely within one country" and then argues with itself. Simplify the back to Greenland (Kingdom of Denmark). New Guinea and Borneo are shared between countries, so they don't count.
  • Card 40 calls Banks Island uninhabited. It isn't: the hamlet of Sachs Harbour is there. Keep "uninhabited" for Devon and Somerset only.

Islands work best with a lakes deck alongside them. Manitoulin, the largest lake island, sits in a lake you'll meet in the World's Largest Lakes guide. Its Nettilling Lake card also sends you back to Baffin Island.
