Every French sentence asks you to decide between le or la and du or des, and those choices come before the verb. French Articles, Gender & Irregular Verbs (deck code QB0320) drills those decisions in 148 cards. The deck reads like a grammar map in seven blocks:

How many distinct stems does aller use?three: all-, v-, ir-

What you'll drill: le/la/les/l', un/une/des, du/de la/de l', the contractions au/aux/du/des, and feminine endings (-tion, -sion, -ité, -logie, -aison) vs masculine ones (-aire, -isme, -ème, -ège). The deck also covers:

  • Tricky genders: amour, délice and orgue (masculine singular, feminine plural), gens, personne, après-midi.
  • Same word, two genders: le/la livre, critique, voile.
  • Irregular plurals: chevaux, travaux, cieux, aïeux.
  • Adjective forms: belle/bel, nouvelle/nouvel, blanche, heureuse, the BAGS rule, grand homme vs homme grand.
  • Small words: every possessive from mon to leurs, ce/cet/cette/ces, and the subject, direct and indirect pronouns.
  • Verbs: être, avoir, faire, aller, venir, tenir, prendre, mettre, envoyer and pouvoir, plus the future stems ir-, viendr-, tiendr- and enverr-.

Three cards to rewrite

  • Card 26 (professeur): la professeure is no longer only Canadian. It has been standard in France too since the Académie française accepted feminine job titles in 2019.
  • Card 147: "verbs of movement take être" is too broad. Marcher, courir and nager take avoir. The être verbs are a closed list of about 17 verbs plus their compounds (devenir, revenir) and all pronominal verbs.
  • Card 37: only seven -ou nouns take -x (bijou, caillou, chou, genou, hibou, joujou, pou). Learn those seven and use -s for every other -ou noun.

Study tips

Learn des three ways at once. The same word appears on three cards: indefinite plural (des livres), partitive plural, and de + les (la fin des vacances). Keep these cards next to each other and write one example sentence for each. After a negation, the indefinite and partitive forms become de: je n'ai pas de livres. The deck never teaches this.

Turn the verb block into tables. The 50 verb cards are split person by person, and several are incomplete: venir and tenir skip tu and vous, mettre has no present tense, and pouvoir has only je. Make one six-form card per verb (je viens, tu viens, il vient, nous venons, vous venez, ils viennent) and drill it as a whole.

Next, the French subjunctive and pronouns guide covers y, en and the order of double object pronouns.
