Deck QX7550 is not a bookkeeping deck. Across 59 cards it never asks you to post a journal entry — only what each statement reports, who reads it, and under which rulebook it was prepared. It is a reading deck: right before an intro accounting exam or your first real annual report, wrong if you came for debits and credits.

Two halves, two ways to drill them
Cards 1-23 run in a deliberate order: the four statements, the qualities they must have, the users (owners and managers, employees, prospective investors, financial institutions), then the standard setters and MD&A. From card 24 the sequence collapses into an unordered glossary. Study the first block in order, shuffle the second.
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| What does a balance sheet report? | A company's assets, liabilities, and owners equity at a given point in time |
| Key difference between a balance sheet and an income statement in terms of time | A balance sheet represents a snapshot in time, whereas the income statement represents activities over an accounting period |
| What three types of activities does a cash flow statement track? | Operating, investing, and financing activities |
| The balance sheet equation | Assets = Liabilities + Equity |
| Purpose of MD&A | To provide a narrative explanation, through management's eyes, of how an entity has performed, its financial condition, and future prospects |
| Consolidated financial statements | Financial statements where the assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses and cash flows of the parent and its subsidiaries are presented as a single economic entity |
| Working capital | The difference between current assets and current liabilities, representing short-term financial health |
| Asset impairment | A reduction in the recoverable value of an asset below its carrying value on the balance sheet |
| Debenture | A type of debt instrument that is not secured by physical assets or collateral |
The vocabulary you walk away with
Balance sheet, income statement (profit and loss statement), statement of changes in equity, cash flow statement, notes to the financial statements, annual report to stockholders; assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses, accounting period, financial position, financial performance; GAAP, FASB, IASB, IFRS, MD&A, consolidated statements, economic entity, subsidiary; working capital, debt securities, debenture, share capital, share buyback, liquidity position, asset impairment, restructuring charges; financial analysis, corporate transparency, collective bargaining.
Sort every card onto one axis: snapshot or span
The distinction the deck keeps testing is point-in-time versus period. Balance sheet, financial position, working capital and liquidity are snapshots; income statement, cash flow statement, statement of changes in equity and financial performance are spans. Tag your cards that way and half the deck answers itself — and the duplicates surface: financial position (card 53) and changes in financial position (card 55) restate cards 2 and 4 almost word for word — keep one of each pair.
Three backs that need a date stamp
The four qualities card — "understandable, relevant, reliable and comparable" — is the 1989 IASB framework. The 2018 Conceptual Framework replaced reliability with faithful representation and demoted comparability, verifiability, timeliness and understandability to enhancing qualities. The IFRS adoption card lists Australia, Canada and the EU; over 140 jurisdictions now require IFRS. And the FASB card promises convergence with IFRS: the joint projects effectively ended around 2014 and the two frameworks remain separate. Keep the cards, add the correction to the back. One smaller footnote: a debenture is unsecured in US usage, but in the UK it is normally secured by a charge over assets.
