N3 is the level where Japanese stops looking like a textbook and starts looking like a notice board: 規則 on the office wall, 薬局 on a street sign, 危険 on a fence. The Kanji N3 deck on Flip It (deck code QS9714, 278 cards) trains exactly that vocabulary of signs, news and paperwork. Each card shows one kanji; the back gives its core English meanings, the on'yomi and kun'yomi in kana with romaji, and a hint word using the character.

What the 278 kanji cover

The first 56 cards are a mixed frequency list (世, 中, 情, 増, 当, 実, 役, 度, 務, 則, 単, 達, 関, 変, 術, 題, 局, 制, 限, 能, 技, 受, 過, 比, 扱, 際). From card 57 the deck switches to themed clusters, which is its real strength:

  • Money and work: 配, 舗, 給, 雇, 益, 費, 収, 払, 購, 商, 労, 職, 企, 資
  • Politics: 官, 政, 治, 党, 府, 票, 投, 選
  • War: 戦, 兵, 軍, 武, 攻, 敗, 勝, 防, 守, 護
  • Law and crime: 警, 察, 罪, 犯, 罰, 獄, 判, 裁, 弁
  • Measuring and deciding: 計, 算, 数, 量, 測, 定, 確, 認, 証
  • Time: 仮, 暫, 瞬, 期, 季, 刻, 既, 未, 将, 予
  • Body and emotions: 筋, 骨, 液, 脈, 臓, 脳, 魂, 快, 喜, 怒, 哀, 悲, 苦, 痛

How to study it

Learn the clusters as sets of look-alikes. The themed order puts confusable pairs side by side: 護 / 警 (both "guard"), 罪 / 犯 (crime), 判 / 裁 (judge), 状 / 態 / 況 (state), 易 / 簡 / 単 (simple). For each set, write one compound per kanji: 状況, 態度, 状態. A meaning card won't tell 判 from 裁; 裁判 (trial) and 判断 (judgment) will.

Read the meaning off the hint word. Several English meanings are just the meaning of the compound in the hint: 水 = "level, standard" (from 水準), 子 = "appearance" (from 様子), 不 = "unpleasant" (from 不快), 象 = "elephant, phenomenon". Remember 水 as water, 子 as child, 不 as the negative prefix un-/non-, and study the compound as its own word.

Clean up five cards. Card 5 (々) is a repetition mark, not a kanji. Card 264 shows a whole word (神経) instead of one character. Cards 119, 171 and 260 have leftover characters in the meaning (織織, 险険, 脈脈); delete them. Also note that the JLPT has had no official kanji list since 2010, so treat "N3" as a rough level: 日, 月, 本, 学, 時 and 年 are N5 kanji you can mark as known on day one.

Where it fits

With about 278 kanji, this deck sits between beginner lists and the 895-card Kanji N2 & N1 study guide. Pair it with the JLPT N3 vocabulary deck: almost every hint word here (問題, 技術, 関係, 歴史) shows up as a vocabulary item there.
