Three thousand years of pharaohs, from Narmer to Cleopatra VII, is a lot of history to hold in your head. The Flip It deck Ancient Egypt (LB0883) compresses it into 79 cards. The deck is accurate, but it is not in order. Its first 40 cards are themes (government, religion, monuments, famous rulers). The dynastic timeline only begins at card 41, and the predynastic cultures appear at card 67. Here is how to turn that into a story you can remember.

The full vocabulary
Pharaoh, vizier, nomarch, hieroglyphs, papyrus, the Giza pyramids, the Great Sphinx, emmer wheat and barley, faience, Ma'at, the Book of the Dead, mummification, canopic jars, shabti figures, the Rosetta Stone (hieroglyphic, Demotic, Greek), Tutankhamun (tomb found 1922), Hatshepsut, Akhenaten and the Amarna Period, the Valley of the Kings, mastabas, obelisks, Karnak, Amun, Ra, Osiris, Isis, Anubis, Bastet, the Narmer Palette, Memphis, the First Intermediate Period droughts (2200-2150 BC), the Hyksos, the Kushite 25th Dynasty and Taharqa, the Assyrian conquest (671-667 BC), the Saite Period, the Ptolemaic Kingdom, the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria, Actium, the corvée, Badarian and Naqada cultures, the Sea Peoples and the Edwin Smith Papyrus.
Tip 1: rebuild the timeline before memorising facts
On your first pass, study the cards in chronological order rather than in deck order. Start with the Naqada and Badarian cultures (67), then Narmer (3, 40) and the Early Dynastic Period (41). Next come the Old Kingdom (42), the First Intermediate Period (43), the Middle Kingdom (44-45), the Hyksos and Ahmose (46-47), the New Kingdom and Kadesh (5, 72, 48) and the Sea Peoples (73). The late sequence is Libyans and Kushites (49-51), Assyria (52), Sais (53), Persia (54), the Ptolemies (55) and Rome (58). After that, the thematic cards have a period to attach to: pyramids go with the Old Kingdom, the Valley of the Kings with the New.
Tip 2: patch the gaps and nuance a few backs
- Horus, Set and Thoth never get a card, even though the Osiris myth makes no sense without them. Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the builders of Giza, are never named either. Add these six cards.
- Demotic is mentioned on the Rosetta Stone card but never defined, and hieratic is missing entirely.
- 3150 BC is a traditional date; many recent chronologies say c. 3100 BC. The Ptolemaic Kingdom began in 305 BC, not in 332 BC when Alexander arrived. Actium was fought in 31 BC; Egypt was annexed in 30 BC after Alexandria fell.
- Cards 74-75 (Christianity, the Arab conquest of AD 642) fall outside the 3150-30 BC range set by card 1. Treat them as an epilogue.
